I'd agree with all that. But, ad one more. We are too concerened with the Apollo Onos and Shaquille O'neals of the world, rather than the averageperson getting involved in sports or being athletic. Like, student bodies should be more represented on college sports teams.
I'm with Top Chef's Stefan Richter in that article who proclaims that the idea that Americans are so much fatter than people from around the world is just not true. I've worked in very busy public store's for longer than many people here have been alive and I've yet to spot these supposed herds of overweight children and adults that the news is constantly making claims are running amuck.

30% or so are obese 60% or so are overweight, and obese. It really doesn't take much to be overweight though. Obese on the other hand is tends to take some practice.
While most people want to blame fast food the problem is deeper than that. Convenience food is the problem. Even most homemade meals are prepackage meals that are just as bad as any fast food. These foods have been creeping their way into american culture for over 40 years now, and just now it it becoming apparent their effects. Most food convenience food wasn't really able to penetrate the European market until the development of the European Union basically made trading in Europe child's play, and now their quickly following the US's footsteps, and are quickly raising an obese generation themselves.
Raise the price of food so people don't have the comfort of eating when they want. Or develop some technology that reconfigures harmful body matter into something beneficial.CRS98
They're working on that.
Pretty interesting stuff.
The rest of the world thin? I think you'll find that there are many nations (including some surprising ones) that have exactly the same problem. Really what it boils down to is excessive calorie consumption combined with insufficient activity to burn the calories. Extended life spans contribute as well, as it becomes more and more difficult to prevent weight gain as a person ages and metabolism slows.

convenience food may be a factor, but it shouldn't be the reason people get fat. i'd say about 90% of what i eat i would consider convenience food, and i'm in great shape.Raise the price of food so people don't have the comfort of eating when they want. Or develop some technology that reconfigures harmful body matter into something beneficial.CRS98what about the people like me that could sit around all day, eat whatever we want, and still not gain weight?

Technically it isn't your fault if someone is black, either, but that isn't a good reason to make fun of their race.
It may not be "your fault" that he is fat, but it is your fault if you begin shouting insults at him due to his weight. I still haven't grasped why people think it's okay to insult the overweight.

The overall quality of food is another aspect that should be taken into consideration. With the increase in global population, the general quality of food goes down due to quantitative deficiencies of prime ingredients, sustainable growing techniques, and adequate livestock raising methods. It should come as no surprise though, given that the potential for highly available perfected foods is diminished by a rapidly growing population that dramatically spiked due to the Industrial Revolution.

Please tell me you aren't actually proposing this. :| I say we raise the price of unhealthy food and lower the price of healthy food. Then just move the money around so people are getting generally the same amount that they were before. Sure it's a little clunky, but whatever[QUOTE="CRS98"]Raise the price of food so people don't have the comfort of eating when they want. Pirate700

It's not okay. A lot of them, A LOT OF THEM do not appreciate being made fun of. No matter how hard they try and hide it. It's wrong to make fun of someone being fat. This being said, it's technically not okay to BE fat, either. A lot of the time, they got there themselves. In all fairness, more Americans would probably be a little more fit if walking and biking places was an option. It is not an option in my area, we're not rural but everything in my area is located in two small cities, each about 10 miles away from me. My last job was 30 miles away from me. We're a very spread out country.
very true. I live out in the country myself and my job is in town and it's a 30 minute drive just to get there. In all fairness, more Americans would probably be a little more fit if walking and biking places was an option. Self control is the best dietary plan on offer... and it's free.
And it works for alcohol, tobacco and all other sorts of things too.
yeah...you'd be surprised how many fat people i've seen in other countries, as for me, im more chubby than fat since i can actually run up 4 flights of stairs everyday and not get tired
It's true guys, In my hometown I use to play soccer every single day and I mean it like literlly every single day, and I barely watch TV comparing to now, and also the weather helped because it used to be sunny most of the time and now where I live I see sun only like 3 months of the whole year, now I'm 80 pounds heavier, I understand I'm older but I also changed and I'm not acive like I use to be:(
Omg!! Another survey which portrays Americans as fat/stupid/ugly! Stop the presses! Seriously this is getting old. Maybe in inner city situations if you stand outside a fast food restaurant you might run across several obese people, but that could happen anywhere. I live in a small community that, except for a few individuals, would be considered pretty fit. I'm tired of these over-generalized depictions of American lifestyles making the rest of us look bad.
It all has to do with Federal regulations and social norms. Not since the days of Henry the 8th have fat-arses been seen as beautiful. America is fat through processed malnutrition. Europe values the quality of their food. America just wants to shove it down their throat.
Well I know in the UK If you drive by a secondary school at 8:00am you'll see the kids walking, maybe one in a hundred would be fat, so there aren't many fat kids around here these days. I don't know what to say for America I only visited the place once. I find that most men 40+ are overweight however. Rare I see anyone who looks like they done any exercise past that point.
There isn't many fat people in the colleges over here either, very, very few. About 1/50 I would say. I think most of the reason why there isn't many fat ones down here is it's too much of a stigma, makes them feel too depressed to walk around like that. The worlds a lot more fashionable then it used to be, it's shows up more if you look a state or if you got curves in the wrong places.
