Its simple, they aren't.

Because you can put some food and water on the floor, go away for a day or two, come back and the cat looks at you as though to say: "You're back? Oh good, the food dish was getting empty."

Plus dogs are very very needy. Go away for a few hours and they cry and chew the heck out of your stuff!
