I understand the secrecy in countries such as Iraq where taking part in the first election after a dictatorship obviously there is going to be some violence. However in countries such as America, the UK etc. I don't understand this fear. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of any major situations where violence has been used to influence votes in these countries in recent years.

If people are prepared to put their "X" next to the name of a person they want to run their country for the next 4 years then you'd think they'd have the guts to say who that is.

Maybe it's because I don't vote that I don't understand it, but i think it's dumb how it's almost considered the same as asking someone how much they make a year,

Because people are very passionate about politics and you can never tell who supports what, so it's easy to get into a heated discussion. Also, people can be very cruel and offensive against the opposite side (see any posting forum on practically any site on politics).

And believe it or not, people will hold your beliefs against you. And if this happens in the workplace, you may simply not get 'that promotion' etc. I kid you not..

I remember back in the 1992 election, my friend couldn't believe I supported the other candidate and said 'He lost all respect for me.' for doing so. And the way he said it was pretty hurtful.

You don't say this to a friend of over a decade. And even though we are still friends, I'll never forget that if I don't believe the way he does, I don't have his respect.

I think most people encounter something similar so honestly it's better off kept to yourself.

I'm not secretive about it at all. I sent in my absentee ballot last week with the circle next to Obama/Biden filled in.

its not that they're secretive. it's a personal issue and often time people feel they will be attacked or questioned for for thier choices and they do not want to deal with that.

to avoid any undue influence. People can clearly vote their mind if they aren't concerned about it being public.

Not really from what ive seen. Most Obama supporters are happy to tell you who they're voting for. While yelling out"We need change" about a billion times. People act like Obama is the best politician there has been. I dont like Obama or McCain very much, but I agree with John McCain more than Obama.

It's more of a personal thing to me, not that it should exemptly be kept secret, speak your mind if you have to. But people will often get into arguments over who to vote. That's why it's kept secret.

Keep telling yourself that, and believing what the reps and Fox News tell you, because other then those two sources no one has ever mentioned or even brought up that idea. Not to mention keeping a vote secret has been around for many elections, not just this one.

It does happen I've seen it. It's sad really, this election makes me more depressed every day.

In fact I've been called a racist a few times because of my McCain bumper sticker.

Really? Whenever I say to someone I dont agree with Obama's views and I am voting for McCain, they call me a racist. I'm not lying to you either. Not everyone says this, but many do.

I think it's mainly because some people get really pissed off if you don't agree with them. No need to ruin a friendship over politics.

Because a lot of people don't want to end up at odds with others based on political views. I only share my views with family and those closest to me.

But on here I'll tell you straight up that I don't support any of the candidates. I'll vote McCain though.
