I don't get really why there are considered such shameful words, in public. I mean, some of them are pretty nasty and rude to say, but others..I don't get.

What do you think?

With a name like Blas5ph3my, it's no wonder you would ask this. ;) Honestly, I do not know. I think it's because of the implications of the word. For example, if I called you an idiot, you might take offense. If I called you a *****, it would be like calling you an idiot, only in an attempt to be more offensive, if that makes sense.

Words aren't inherently bad, it's how you use them that matters.

Swearing isn't necessarily bad. It is, however, largely unecessary. When someone uses expletives as punctuation marks in their speech, I seriously question their intelligence.

They aren't bad, but they also are not necessary.

Using them too much makes you look ridiculously ignorant.

Actually they are. Take the C word for example. In anglo saxon this was a passive word but was adopted as a war cry because its the most violent sounding word you can say. So its very sound is inherently distrubing however you say it.

Well the entire purpose of "cuss" words as you put it, is to add emphasis in a bad way. For example, I remember the days when if someone said " *Bleep* You " they where probably really mad, whereas now it's said so much in a joking manner that I believe that phrase, and all other "bad" words, have lost all meaning and purpose.

People decided that there should be extreme words used only to show extreme emotion in extreme situations.

Then some people overused the words and ****ed it all up.

Nothing about them is inherently "bad" or "offensive." The only reason some people take offense to some of them is because they were brought up to believe that the words were "bad." Humbug was considered a profanity 100 years ago, but it isn't now.

It isn't the word that is bad but the use of the word.

"Holy crap!" as an expletive carries the exact same meaning as its profane counterpart "Holy ****!" Neither are inherently offensive.

If you say them too much they bring down a ruthless curse to all humans which causes you to puke up your intestines, it also releases Geldon who can only be destroyed with an anceint rune stone from the knights of Stands and Practices.

Well, it's really a simple concept. Some people may argue words have no value at all and are neither good or bad, but this doesn't make sense in the terms of how language is used and others relate to each other.

It's just that you can't have positive words, without negative ones. Or the positive words wouldn't exist either. So yes, there are positive and negative words. Without either there is no contrast and with no contrast no meaning behind language.

Of course we have to consider cultural pressures on language and how language changes over time. But essentialy there will always be both good and bad words in a culture. For purposes of communication there must be both.

To put it succinctly: [quote="Lenny Bruce"] It's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness.

It's bad because it's taboo.

me and my brother started using "frack", from BattleStar Galactica around the folks last summer, to prove any word can be "bad" if you let it. Wouldnt you know it, it started to work! haha

I hate it how people treat curses like "voldemort" from Harry potter. It is very redundant and annoying.

I guess they are bad because a while ago they slowly became offensive through use and definition... and our parents teach them to us as bad... and so on.
