Why are some people on the Internet so rude and mean?

In Brazzilbrief, a forum I used to hang on under the name X4D I asked a guy called Macunaima for some advice relating to a girl I was obsessing over. This Macunaima guy responded rudely to me and said that this girl is a rich kid and that she is not going to date me. This Macunaima guy also humiliated and belittled me further in public in several other threads where we had an argument. He also called me an Emo boy who digs the abuse after I responded back to him in the same rude manner.

My question is: Why are some people so mean on the Internet?

Because we can. I believe everyone does it sooner or later. We are faceless here, no one knows who we are.

Not sure...i try not to be...i act as i would face to face...or at least...i try to..

But to spend months of your life obsessing over someone you've never met, whose photo you've only seen on the internet, who sent you ONE e-mail politely telling you she wasn't interested...

That may be normal, healthy behavior in your neck of thewoodsover in Jersey, but it certainly isn't in mine.

Gotta´ hand it to him, the man does seem to have a point.

Think of it this way: if you had the chance to say mean things to someone you hate without the chance of you getting physically hurt, having people see your reactions, and a lesser risk of you getting in trouble, would you take it? A lot of people would, and that's exactly why they bash people over the internet. Anonymity is the security blanket of the internet, and it gives people the power to say things that they couldn't say to you in real life.

Either

1. Some sort of vengeance because they often face rude and mean people in their life outside the Internet

2. Their true personality

3. To gain e-cred (as opposed to street cred)

People on the internet are not mean, they are just honest.

Because some people are rude and mean, period.

Because people can say things here that they would probably never in real life. I have a feeling if that guy met you in person he would look completly different from what you imagined. Plus its easy to get away with it on the internet you can be the most shy person in the real world and come here and have Kahonas of steel lol

Listen here "Super Bagman" :P, Some people will do that. You wanna know why? Because THEY ARE BEHIND A COMPUTER SCREEN. They're all big and bad behind a screen but if you two were standing infront of each other, he probably wouldn't have done that. Some people can talk and back it up and some are all bark, no bite. And there's also other reasons why some people act like that. Like I said earlier, There are some people that can talk and back it up and then there's some that are all bark and no bite. Some people also like to just do it just for the heck of it also.
