I could be wrong, but I think they believe that God made you the way you are, and you shouldn't do anything to alter your body.

I'm not going to look up the Quran for you. If you want t know so bad, go look it up yourself. Islamic people are supposed to keep as clean as they can. That means not painting your skin with inks and other things. You think I am talking about keeping dirt off your body. Go read the book.

Not sure about Islam but in Christianity a person's body is metaphorically the their temple, which houses the holy spirit of christ. To get tattoos would be like walking into a church and spray-painting a giant skull on the wall. your essentially violating your temple by doing so.

In Christianity your body is considered as a metaphoric temple, so some religions look as tatoos as painting a picture on a temple.

While you are correct about a human's body being a sort of temple for God, it is still widely debated as to whether or not having a tattoo violates that templle. The temple in this case may be more than just our skin.

I guess it would depend on what you or your religion says. I'm not here to debate if it's right or wrong, I'm simply saying this is why MOST religions consider it wrong. In any case, I do feel that is has more of a meaning then just tatoos.

There are a few authentic hadiths from Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) where he has cursed and forbid the one who tattoos and the one who receives it.

on of the main reason for us jews was that it was a pagan tradition so we outlawed it to separate ourselves from them(a rabbi told me)

the other reasons such as sanctity of body are also true

Read the above for a in-depth explanation. The Qur'an does not specifically mention that you cannot tattoo yourself, however the ruling is derived from it.

I don't have a religion, I just personally don't like tattoos, I think they detract from the natural beauty of one's skin

If you're Jewish, you're not supposed to get one, but you can still be buried in a Jewishcemetery, depending on your sect of Judaism.

because it promotes individuality and the last thing a religion wants is individuality. Conform or burn in hell. :|
