Why aren't we offered foreign languages earlier?

For a lot of the U.S. you can't take a foreign language until 8th or 9th grade. Which by then it is a lot harder and takes a lot more work to learn. Why isn't a language.. say spanish which would make the most sense in this country offered to us as soon as say kindergarten?

Because the concept of electives aren't introduced until around the grades you mentioned.

That is true, but still why not just teach them both. Languages are easier to grasp when you are young.

We had mandatory Japanese class when I was in elementary school (I grew up on a military base in Japan) and I felt so stupid because I was taking Japanese from 2nd grade to 6th grade, and the white kids that just moved there were already speaking better Japanese than I did:cry:

in most regions, children wont use spanish in kindergarten. and id hate to sound like a jackass, but kids are stupid. most of them cant handle learning two languages at once. at the end of the day, english does and should take first priority.

I was taking French since kindergarten. It didn't give me any sort of advantage though, aside from that I nailed the accent down.

Not all of Canada. I didn't learn French until Grade 3. It was a waste of my time.

Schools are very evil :( then again I learned two languages at birth and I am currently mastering my fifth language so I can't complain :P

But it's obvious that the schools want the kids to learn English first, however where I am originally from I couldn't take an elective language until 5th grade

In our school we are given the opportunity to choose French or Spanish at 7th grade. I honestly agree that we should learn this at an earlier age. It would be easier for us to learn, and by then we could be learning a third lanuage by then. Our school committee still does not approve of early age foreign language teaching. I also believe we should have a larger variety of languages to learn from.

Well I did take Spanish for a little bit in kindergarten. After a year of that I moved to a new state which means I went to a different school and at the new school they didn't offer Spanish. I think it helped me a lot though, I am very good at Spanish now that I am taking it again. I still remembered some of the alphabet (I memorized it in one day during seventh grade) and I knew a lot of the colors. I'm pretty sure that taking Spanish early on helped me. I'm also pretty smart, but now in freshman year I'm taking Spanish III with sophomores, juniors, and maybe a senior.

Well I wouldve loved to learn Japanese at an early age(I doubt I would be able to learn it now). Then I would be able to watch my favorite anime without waiting for a dub, or with annoying subtitles.

I know what you mean, well except in my case I want to learn Spanish since so many mexicans live in the United States now. If I have a kid later on in my life I will be helping him with both English and Spanish.
