Because he didn't have any vital veins in his wrist and couldn't get to any of the others so he had to kill himself by crossing a road, unfortunately he only had several near misses and didn't get hit.
His girlfriend was driving down the road. Or she used to be his girlfriend, seven years ago. She had been having an affair during their semi-serious relationship of two years and twelve days (and the chicken, never, ever forgot that duration). And so she drove. And he stepped in front, suddenly, wildly, with a look of a desparate animal in his eyes (for, what else is a chicken in that situation to look like?). He had not intended to kill himself and in the end it was in a way his ex who did it. I attended the funeral, as did thousands of others. It was heart-wrenching yet moving at the same time. His ex shortly after the funeral commited suicide. It was terrible.
