Religion and intelligence have nothing to do with each other. The idea that Albert Einstein believed in God therefore it must be true is just ridiculous. There are intelligent/unintelligent people of faith and there are intelligent/unintelligent atheists.

I agree, it's a misconception. For a lot of people, religion has been drilled into their minds ever since they were children, and for some of these people, not matter how intelligent they may be, they cannot shake the belief, they're stuck with it.

This... Frankly it's often a matter of how people present themselves, not a blanket judgement that religion = stupidity. There is something to be said however, for the notion that people who happily subsume their critical thinking to a high degree are not the brightest bulbs extant. By the same token, it's worth giving people a chance without an assumption... which is often dissapointing.

Well, there is a higher prevalence of post secondary education among atheists than among deists. Education and Intelligence are completely unrelated though, even though they may appear similar on the surface.

Some people who are atheists grew up in an environment where they wasn't exposed to religion, or they were exposed to it but it wasn't strong enough to make them be religious themselves. As a result, they might see somebody who believes in God (or another deity) and automatically assume that because they can so easily rationalize that God doesn't exist that if this guy can't rationalize God doesn't exist he's a moron.

It's not that much different than a Christian assuming somebody who believes in the tooth fairy and is over the age of five is a moron. You can't really help what some people think even if you don't agree with it. Plus, it doesn't help that this is OT and most of the posters proudly brag about being an atheist and some of them have no problem openly insulting the religious.

BEcause religious people actually believe a man lived to be 900 years old, walked around the world collecting 2 billion animals, and built a boat and the size of a continent and put them on it. Only a dumbass would believe in this nonsense.

Because very religious people tend to think illogically. I don't think all religious people are stupid, though. Many religious people I know happen to be pretty intelligent.

Perhaps they do because they are playing a numbers game: The majority of humans are stupid. The majority of humans subscribe to a religion of some sort.

So odds are, if you are religious, you are also stupid.

Smart people can believe in God but when they are religious it's harder to keep a straight face. I was brought up in a very religious family so it's no excuse to say "that's how I was raised so that's what I'll believe". You are your own person, look at the evidence and figure things out for yourself.

Hope for the best, expect the worst... in that sense just reiterate what SunTzu said earlier. A vast majority of the people aren't particularly bright, of which a further majority are poorly educated yet highly opinionated. Hope to find the exceptions, but be prepared to wade through a river of shіt to get there.

Some atheists are closed minded and ignorant and think they are more intellligent than religious people. Ironic because only a stupid person would make such a broad generalisation, and as you said many religious people have been intelligent and made great strides to society.

I feel like some christian do a terrible job defending their beliefs. so they look stupid. they my brothers and sisters true, but real talk sometimes christian miss the point. at first glance a religious person looks weak cus they put all their faith and fear into something unseen by the human eye also religious people are like sheep. hence jesus christ the good sheperd. religious people act like sheep animals really.

probably because it's totally irrational to believe in god (the christian god, anyways). i know the TC didn't specify christians, but i assumed that is mostly what he meant.

Why a I reminded of that Eureka episode....

Anyway...

Most people assume someone with a contradicting viewpoint is ignorant, wrong, or stupid

Many assume the black and white notion that there is only right and wrong, and ,"I know I'm right so you must be wrong", concept.

From my experience, it's the total opposite. Feel free to disagree, but I find more often than not a Christian has a sincere response as to what they believe, while the atheists (on Yahoo, Youtube, Gamespot) just says "It's bullsh*t" and aggressively berating everyone who disagrees without any kind of rationalization, without really thinking it through, or have ever read the Bible. I know there was a study that liberals and atheists have a higher IQ than Christians, but ever since, incredibly, INCREDIBLY stupid people have jumped on the atheist bandwagon in hopes of raising their low IQ 20 points. There might be some stupid Christians out there (like the_plan_man :o...beat you guys to it), and some intelligent atheists (Stephen Hawking), but the stupid Christians pale in comparisson to the kind of idiocracy found in stupid atheists on the internet.

Somebody believing something based on nothing...

...basing large parts of their life on something they're assuming...

...forcing or attempting to convert others to their way of thinking despite having no evidence themselves...

Basically it's illogical to believe in something based on nothing, if somebody fails with that simple concept, it's not surprising that others may think them to be stupid.

It's just like any other stereotype I think. Tons of religious people have done some pretty idiotic things which has cemented the ideas that you think about. There are a lot of great religious people in the world, but many of them are stupid in the way that they disprove logic as a defense of their religion.

Well, the believing in magic bit does tend to interfere with rational discourse, but not always.
