Well? Why do people eat with their right hand, but then switch the fork to their left hand and cut with their right? This seems like too much work? You have to set down silverware or whatever just to "piece" up your food. Since around the age of 13 or so when I said this is dumb, I just started eating with my left hand always and then when I need to cut, use my right hand. The only time when I don't do this is when I am at a table with a ton of other right handers... then you start bumping elbows.ice_radon
Well I do it because I was taught very early on, that food should be eaten with the right hand, since the right hand is clean.

Yeah, I know that is the proper way, but I just feel that it is way harder and more fumbling around with tossing your fork between your left and right hand.I use the fork with my left and cut with my right. However, if I don't have a knife, I only use my right hand.FrozeN__54I think this is how most people do it. I've never seen someone eat the way TC described, that just sounds stupid. I actually noticed only a few days ago that when people are only using a fork or a spoon they would use their right hand, though if they had both a knife and fork they would always keep it in their left hand. I'm left handed so even when I'm just using a fork or spoon I'll keep it in my left hand, which really makes the most sense.
To get a better cutting angle?
I am not going to:
1) Pick my entire plate up and spin it.
2) Rip my food apart like some slob.
3) Play with my food and drag it around my plate into a better angle.
I always keep the fork my in left hand, and the knife in my right, at all times. I hate people who switch their fork from hand to hand or, even worse, only eat with a fork in their right hand using the edge of it to 'chop' things. It seems so uncouth :P
Yeah, there is a point where people should use a knife, but do not. Like they are clearly struggling to "cut" whatever they are trying to cut with their fork when they could use a knife. For easy things like "cutting" stuffing or even a looser meatloaf, I don't mind people using the edge of their forks, but when you are struggling, but insist on not using a knife, I sometimes wonder.I always keep the fork my in left hand, and the knife in my right, at all times. but when you are struggling, but insist on not using a knife, I sometimes wonderice_radonHaha yeah I hadn't really thought about that til now but I'm pretty sure I've probably watched someone trying to do that a few times in open-mouthed wonderment. The idea of it being 'easier' is obviously negated - why not use a knife?
i have never seen anyone actually switch which hand their fork is in during a meal, and if i ever do i shall slap them in the face.
i'm right handed so if i have a knife and fork the knife is needed more so i use my right hand for it, and if i don't need a knife i will use my right hand for my fork.
Simply put, I am not ambidextrous enough to cut effectively with my left hand.mindstormI believe it just takes practice.
I use the fork with my left and cut with my right. However, if I don't have a knife, I only use my right hand.FrozeN__54Same here.
I'm right handed. When there is something that needs cutting with a real knife and not just the side of the fork, I hold the food steady with the fork in my left hand and cut with my right. I cut the whole thing up (steak for instance) and then put the knife down and eat with the fork in my right hand. I don't see what the big deal is? Oh noz, I can't eat that bite of food in a millisecond, I have to wait a full couple seconds to cut my food up. You know you are supposed to chew your food upwards of 50 times before swallowing to allow your body to digest it properly right? I'm sure you are all doing that as well . . .

Being left handed, I cut with my left when using a knife and fork. But if I'm eating something which only requires a fork, I'll use my left......though I sometimes have the odd awkward moment (depending on the type of food) where I'm cutting with my left, and then I need to switch my fork into my left hand because it's sometimes too hard to scoop with my right hand...

Bit of an exaggerationtossing between left and right? what are you eating? Bit of an exaggerationchaoscougar1Unless you are a drummer with stick-twirling skills maybe. That could be fun to watch.
I'm not American. So i hold my fork in my left and knife with my right. Unless i'm just using a fork in which case i hold it in my right. That's how people eat in england...
So why pick an avatar that's eating with a pair of forks?I eat with my hands , true story.
Its a cultural thing.

Well since I am right handed I prefer to cut with my and eat with my right. However I do all the cutting at once to get it out of the way then I eat. mrmusicman247
i do the exact same thing.
Can't remember the last time I used a knife for eating. I just use a fork to cut, and if it's tough I use my teeth, less dish as well.
But I think at some point I used fork in left and knife in right, felt really awkward though...Probably why I skipped the whole knife-thing.

Fork in steak and take a bite.
Are you saying you're incapable of cutting food with either hand? It's not that hard.. Since we're making up ridiculous situations, to answer your question TC: I switch hands because I do not want to get an STD.To get a better cutting angle?

Fork right, knife left, yet I'm right handed. I just figure if you're spending most time using your fork why not use your most well cooordinated hand? People that bicker about table manners to the extreme such as what hand to use or how fast you should eat piss me off too, why make such a fuss?
