For the same reason they are committing a crime in the first place. They're idiots.

Scenario:

Guy A : "I totally stabbed Johnny to death last night"
Guy B : In shocked tone of disbelief "You didn't"
Guy A : "Nah, I totally did, check out this video of me doing it"

This both implies the stupidity of doing so, in misunderstanding the intonation and meaning of his friend, but also his attempt to earn street cred by proving to his friends that he stabbed Johnny to death.
