Why Do People Find Spiders So Scary?

Something I will likely never understand. I knows there's plenty of irrational fears out there, some even more ridiculous, but spiders have to be far and away the most common of the lot. Of course if a deadly poisonous spider of sorts was in your home then that would be understandable to fear, as you're potentially fearing for your life, but when people are so often scared of harmless little spiders the length of their smallest finger I'm just left confused as to why...

Anything with more than four legs just looks creepy in my opinion. But I'd rather touch a spider than this:

I think it's just the fact that they are so far removed from more familiar animals (and ourselves). They way they move, their speed, their ability to climb walls and ceilings...it's just completely alien to human beings.

I had a pet tarantula as a kid. Wouldn't mind having another one.

I used to be very afraid of spiders, but having a wife that forced me to kill them helped me get over the fear. I hate centipedes more now.

I was thinking that too. I know fear of snakes comes from the past, but have our ancestors really had deadly spider problems?

I've heard that it comes to the extent that people can't play games, not even Minecraft, when spiders are involved. That's a little extreme I find.

I know that irrational fears exist and all that, but still, why is this the one that's so common?

Oh and as for the actual question, spiders and I are cool as long as they're not touching me. They're not so bad. Maybe it's the eyes or something :P

I can't understand why either. I've seen some small spiders and found them very cute.

Even tarantulas can be quite adorable once they're supervised and have their venom taken out. Has anyone pet a tarantula before? They're very soft and furry. I wanna get one someday. :)

In regards to the spider that is trying to be the godzilla of the arachnids, I would have a serious problem with that. However, I don't live in Australia or wherever they have to deal with sh!t like that, so the small spiders I deal with are nothing to be afraid of.

I would need several doctors, and perhaps a padded room for a while. Centipedes fvcking terrify me.

A phobia is really just a highly rational fear gone a wee (to a bloody lot) overboard and is often coupled with a psychical reaction, IE nausea.

And just why is it rational to be afraid of tiny poisonous hell beats, mostly because rockmanfred could not see any difference between them and thus avoided them all like the plague.

Also, stop linking the spider pictures, makes me feel bad, and I will in turn link pictures of ducks and/or clowns looking at you in pm.

Touched one of these without realizing until my friend pointed it out.........Still have the occasional nightmares.

Spiders are funny like that. Take me for example. I literally used to pull a spider's legs off when I saw them, particularly daddy long legs. & I wasn't older than 12 when I was doing that. Cruel? Extremely, and I admit it, but as I got older they suddenly just got under my skin. I mean, they have eight legs, they're hairy, and have anywhere between 0-8 eyes...plus they have this creeper personality that I just loathe to the fullest degree.

They don't top wasps, or snakes though.
