Why do people freak about college tuition when it's so cheap?

I'm not talking about ivy league or any top notch private college. I live in NYC and most of my friends get their college tuition taken care of because of financial aid, some even get money back. In other words they're paying you to goto school. My friend goes to community college here in Queens and he gets $1500 a semester from financial aid, his tuition and books are covered. Why do people say....."hey i'm saving up for my son to goto college", "how will Americans goto college in this economy???", "omg i don't have enough for college so i ain't going".

you're laughing but people who goto community college actually get money back. Some people who goto community make more money and have better jobs than those who goto an expensive state university. The community college person would owe no loans while the university students would owe thousands

I go to a top 20 private school. Factoring in room & board, student fees, and tuition I pay about $50,000 a year. That said, if you go to an in-state public school it's usually a lot cheaper, at "only" $4,000-15,000 per year. I went to a public university for my first two years and paid nothing except room and board thanks to a full-ride state scholarship, but then again a lot of people don't get said scholarship. I also wouldn't judge college costs off of community colleges. They're the cheapest colleges you can attend but you also get what you pay for. In the case of community colleges, you won't even get a bachelor's without transferring to a more expensive college for your final two years.

$1500 covers tuition and books? Even in Canada, where university/college subsidies are massive, I paid more than that for my first semester of college. Well, or would have, without scholarships. University was many times that.

lol... Even if financial aid (in the form of loans) covers your tuition, you will have to pay that money back someday. Also, community colleges tend to be cheaper than most post-secondary institutions. I don't feel like I can complain too much about my tuition. I go to a state university, and my tuition is just over $6,000/year. For me personally that is still quite an expenditure, so I can't imagine paying a lot more than that. Some of my friends go to schools and the tuition there is like $20,000-30,000/year, which is just obscene.

I laugh at the people who pay $50,000 for 1 YEAR of college. I mean, what the hell? I understand if it is Harvard or Yale or something, but I really am dumbfounded when people will do that for a school like USC.

And public universities, as well (flagship state colleges cost an arm and a leg.)

Community colleges are pretty inexpensive, but let's be honest: They're not the first choice for most students. Most students typically want to go to a non-profit institution, be it private or public, large or small, because the education, resources, and opportunities tend to be better than those at community colleges.

I understand the cost of education. I attend a small, private liberal-arts college that is fairly well-ranked, and our student body just recieved an email stating that there will be a tuition hike for the following school year. It sucks, but this is pretty typical of most colleges/universities. Furthermore, people don't consider the amount of scholarships that a person can get by going to a private school. Flagship state colleges usually don't give out much aid. Their sticker price is cheaper than private colleges, but after the average amount of aid from a private school is subtracted from their cost, the price is usually the same. I know very few people at my school who have little or no aid. In my case, it was cheaper going to my current school than it was to attend a large public university.

But that's just me talking.

a community college is a MUCH better school than ITT Tech, Devry and the like. Especially if you go to a 4 year school afterward to get a real bachelor degree

community college... enough said but really it`s not tuition prices of community colleges people complain about it`s the prices of the big guns the universities. Tuition averages aroung $6000 per year here in Ontario. Students just can`t pay for it and parents shouldn`t expect to have to pay for it.

Student loans in Canada are pretty flexible, though, and many people get portions of them forgiven shortly after the repayment period begins.

My family pays 20k to send me to a private school. If I went to the public university in my hometown I would spend 12-15k per year. That's a lot of k's, especially with the all of $0 from federal aid and $2000 I get from a scholarship.

Seriously? First of all, of course CC is going to be cheaper. There's no problem with getting basics or something done there, I actually AM taking one course at my local CC atm, but some opt for a bit more. Financial aid in the form of loans has to be paid back, and not everyone qualifies for need-based assistance. Such is my situation. Both my sister and I are attending the same public university while living at home, yet we have to fork over 4k per semester not including books. In the grand scheme that's a lot less expensive than many other schools, especially had I decided to go out of town or to a private university, but it's hardly something I would consider to be "cheap". I hear some of my classmates speaking about how they spend money they get back from financial aid on recreational stuff (e.g., one guy was talking about making car payments while another girl wanted to get a tattoo) and I can't help but feel that it's pretty unfair.

Not everybody is eligible for Financial Aid, it's really dependent on your parents tax situation and income (if you're living at home and just beginning to tend).

this is true but i haven`t been able to get an OSAP loan because i`m not qualified as an independent and my parents make too much money apparently even though 1 is unemployed. However, my parents are no longer helping me financially they can`t afford it so i`ll be seen as an independent. It will cost me 14k next year for tuition and living expenses. I`m not looking forward to paying off loans for the rest of my life when I`m finished school.

Still, I wouldn't consider that cheap. You rich or something?

Unless the financial aid is from a scholarship, it is an amount you will have to pay back eventually. And community colleges will almost always be cheaper than a state university or a private institution. My tuition is roughly $7,000 per year (not including books or accommodation or food). Not super cheap, but still manageable.

My college has the cheapest tuition in the state but every fall semester they raise tutiton a couple hundred dollars, because they spent money thinking that they would get somuch back but that didn't happen. That's why people freak out about tuition around here.

Life is all about choices. I could have gone to Vanderbilt or SouthWestern and paid quite a bit a year (for a better education)...or even gone to Baylor like my sister. But I chose to go to Tech (where I got paid for my first degree and paid very little for my next couple degrees) There are options out there for those that don't have the means/don't want to pay for an expensive school (usually public, in-state university). It is all about what is important to you...just like having a nice house, car, w/e. I do get tired of hearing people b**** and complain about the cost of higher education though. It was never meant to be for everyone, and IMO 99% of people that want to go to college can. It just might take hard work (working full time) and sacrifices (not getting to go to the school you want to...similar to not getting your dream car)

And that's kind of the problem. There's a reason people go to these schools and it's not just to rub it in the faces of those that don't. They get a top notch education, so why go to a community college where you can't have the best of the best in terms of quality?

Yeah, it's not fun. I'm about halfway through the repayment process now (I've been out of school for almost four years now), though I increased my payment amounts so I'd get it done sooner. I also only had about $17k of loans in the end, which is a little smaller than average. The most depressing part is the beginning, because almost all of your payment goes towards interest, and the only real break on that you get is with your taxes.

It can be pretty costly without financial aid. Here in the UK I get a loan for tuition fees then a ₤5000 maintenance loan (to cover accommodation and living costs). My accommodation for the year costs ₤6k and I'm eligible for no financial aid so I'd be in a real pinch if my parents and grand parents hadn't saved up money over the years. However my other living expenses are tiny so I should still have plenty of that money left by the end of the year and I plan on getting a job over the summer to save up more money. My aim is to try and take out smaller loans so I end up with less debt

Go to a community college. ITT tech and other colleges like that are for profit schools. They are currently being sued by the federal government for illegal financial aid practices. For profit school credits do not transfer and most employers spit on those degrees. Looking them up on rip-off report and the better business bureau and you might start getting sick for even thinking about it.

I go to a public university after I went to community college. I currently pay $4400 in tuition and fees a semester. I pay about $450 for books every semester. I live off campus and pay about $450 in rent and utilities. They are raising tuition 10% next fall because the state government cut funding. I have to use my pell grant and stafford loans to pay for college. My EFC on my fafsa as an independent student disqualifies me from scholarships.

Issues regarding educational quality aside, community college accounts for onlythe first two years. Considering that associates degrees are next to worthless, anyone whom is actually going to college seriously would still have to shell out a fair deal of money.

College was expensive for me; and it's not like I attended a high-end one either. It was about $3000 per semester, not including books, designation exams and other required resources; there were also other expenses such as food, transportation, and some recreational fees. Financial aid, bursaries and scholarships definitely helped. I don't know about you, but $3000 per semester is not exactly pocket change, even with a part time job and summer internship. I'm glad that's all over now for me... though I'm still paying back some of my government issued student loan.

The school I go to is on the higher end of the cost spectrum, but I plan on making about 100k soon after graduation, so I consider it a good investment.

[QUOTE="gameguy6700"]I go to a top 20 private school. In the case of community colleges, you won't even get a bachelor's without transferring to a more expensive college for your final two years.ttobba07

between community and say a school like ITT tech, Devry, Monroe college, which would you go with and why? i been thinking about it..

My EFC on my fafsa as an independent student disqualifies me from scholarships.

when you say they're better do you mean in terms of making more money after graduating or that the education quality is better? cause i have a friend who went to a technical school, Berkeley college, in NYC and got a good job making 60 grand a year at a bank. Berkeley college is a private for profit 4 year college.
