Look, I know this is probably an ignorant thread. Sure, go ahead and flame me for that. I might have even spelled the guy's name wrong. Go ahead and flame me for that too.

I don't know barely (if anything) about Islam, but can anyone tell me why Islamic people go nuts over the despiction of Muhhamed? I mean, is it really THAT bad to see a prophet who an entire religion is somewhat based on? (cant say entirely cuz i dont know too much about the Quran)

Thanks for helping me clear this up guys (cuz knowledge is power!).

(sees christianity mentioned in 3...2...1...)

Lets see... Christianity has been about for 2000 years and Islam about 1400 if I remember right... I honestly can't give you a clear answer. I'm sure there are people who get their panties in a bunch every time someone says "Jesus Christ!" when they get scared or whatever.

before the first split of the church into Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox, there was a debate whether they should show illustrations of church figures or not (the Catholics didn't want images shown). now, however, they've eased up on that. and by now I mean within the last thousand years.

In Islam it's considered blasphemy to create a depiction of anything that God created, and especially if such a thing is done to one of the holiest figures in the religion. That's why when you look at Islamic art it's always intricate patterns, never of humans or anything recognizable from reality.

Let me explain. In Islam, it is forbidden to show pictures of Muhammad (peace be upon him). This was to protect from pictures being dessecrated and reduced to being sold because they are found on toast (remember the Jesus toast anyone?). I am Muslim but I think it is pretty dumb for them to get all mad when someone else does it, because they're doing something bad but I wouldn't worry about it, as long as I'm not doing bad things myself. But sadly, if you look at how poor the people in the Middle East and Africa (yes, Africa is full of Muslims), you'd understand that they can't even get one meal a day for their families, so it's more a matter of there's nothing to do but rot, so they might as well try to stop the disrespect if they can't do anything else. It's not like they can just go get a job like here in the U.S., because there are no jobs because the whole country is messed up. They can't even come to the U.S. or other developed countries (well, most of them can't) because the governments won't let them in if they get the money, and usually they don't have the money to go anywhere, let alone to a new country. If you're wondering why all this happened, the vast majority of their problems came from when the Europeans came, took all of the valuable resources, pretended to establish a government, then left as the nation's gov't was hanging off the edge so they couldn't progress. It's happened for more than 1500 years, and it's happening now with the U.S. in Iraq. It's just what's going on.

His depiction is forbidden because God didnt want Muhammad to turn into an idol for future generations. Idol, as in, being worshipped.

It's kinda for the opposite reason. Mohammad is not traditionally shown at all is to avoid worshipping him above God.

Well I'm not exactly sure about this but I think there are 21 people in Islam that should never be shown and I think Jesus is one them. So when most people choose not to show an image of Muhammad out of respect for the Muslim people it really isn't true because the same people would allow an image of Jesus. Again I'm not entirely show about how true this is.

To me most muslims who get angry about muhammad's depiction are hypocrites. Why? because in islam all prophets are forbidden to be depicted as a picture or anything else. We see people [muslims] go crazy over muhammad's picture [that cartoon we all remember]. Yet why don't they go crazy over Jesus' picture? [rapter jesus anyone?] How about Moses'?[those various movies based on him] Though if i am wrong correct me please.

Those last few lines are a load of rubbish. The Islamic world was already in a state of demise when the Europeans came, dont forget for hundreds of years before that the ottomans were trying to conquer Europe, and after loosing at siege of Vienna they would never be able to do it. This marked the beginning of Islamic decline, the Islam world was then a pushover as it destroyed itself with infighting.

Blaming Europe (as usal) is just an excuse, how came Israel in it tiny history has managed to do more than say Egypt has in the last few hundreds years with or without Europeans there, Egypt was independent before Israel Its barley been able to survive yet look at it? Cant even trade with it nabours unlike the Islamic counties that surround it.

Exactly, in fact Muslims have been attacking Europe for this long, they conquered Spain, Sicily, southern Italy, Greece, Balkans even parts of southern France and many more in that period.

How about not playing the victim all the time:roll:

All Judaic religions have some concern regarding graven images thanks to certain interpretations of the ten commandments in Exodus. The writings of Muhammed (Hadith) can also be interpreted to suggest depictions of the prophet are not appropriate. Not all people who follow Islam are offended by these images, however, it's not some "universal truth". Typically when in doubt it's obviously better to ask (as with any religion) but Islam is big and varied, so there's no one right answer here.

People who detest Art are just short minded. Artistic imagination is a beautifull thing. Now, I'm not religious myself. But the thing I noticed is that Christians certainly aren't against Art. They usually even encourage it as far as I'm aware.

The Artist should be free to paint whatever he wants to imo.

Actually, by the ten commandments, if Jesus of Nazareth turns out to have been a false messiah, then a lot of Christian groups who basically worship Jesus (before God) and take an interpretation of Judaism based mainly on the teachings of Paul might be in a world of wrongdoing (biblically speaking). The idea of the "trinity" exists in part because of the necessity of not making Jesus count as idoltry - however again, if he's not the messiah, then Christians carved thousands of graven images of an idol, which they worshipped, an afront to God.

I'm not saying I believe that, but when you put things in a different perspective the end result can be surprising and at least challenge some thought patterns.

If i went to USA and burnt a USA flag infront of native americans, you think they will walk away? no. Same for the picture. In Islam, any form of picture of muhammed or any prophet(including jesus) is blasphemous and shouldnt be taken lightly. I dont get it why would someone draw it in the first place, its obvious they are trying mimick islam.

Because Muhammed a sacred figure, and their religion is supposedly based on the fact that everyone should have their own image of Muhammed. Something along those lines.

RazMaTaz-1
Burning a flag and drawing a picture are two different things. If I was to create a life size model of Muhammad and burn it, then you'd be on the right lines.

It doenst matter, either way, people will get offended regardless. The only reason people do it is to spark up a riot with the opposing religion, much like the picture of Muhammed. Do you wanna know why Pakistan have banned Youtube in their country? because of a movie trailer called "FITNA" that totally disses Islam that was supposed to be aired online, and guess what, the News didnt mention anything about it did they? All they mentioned was the government of pakistan mistakenly caused Youtube to go down, no reasons for why. Its pathetic that people put Islam down. Muslims dont go around criticising any other religion, so why do people go through drastic measures and diss islam?

no they dont diss us, but they randomly blow people up for not believing in islam, its natural for someone to strike back, even if it is a little cartoon.

beside whatever happened to freedom of speech?
