I know people are dynamic and peoples minds change but I would think people considered something other than their own benefit when making moral decisions? Where are all the antiwar protests? Where was the Tea Party during Bush? Why do people not stand for anything? People pick a religion and cherry pick what they believe (hating homosexuality) but not cutting off hands/stoning children.

Ya, yet we are supposed to feel bad for people who live for nothing. In-fact the media glorifies individuals who succeed at living for nothing (greed, fame, power) rather than equality, efficiency and the betterment of humanity. I have a mountain of respect for the protester who immolated himself a while back. I refuse to respect most of the authority in this country or the pseudo-rebels who hold back progress.

Agreed, it is sickening how people allow the power players to satiate them with such pointless objects. If you actually stand for something you are called crazy. This world is upside down and ****ed up.

I know, right? It's a miserable status quo for sure. Very few people care about empathy these days. And people only act morally for the sake of being rewarded or avoiding legal punishment, effectively forsaking altruism in society.

I think it can be changed, though. It's certainly not impossible.

Because people only value what everyone tells them is popular or "good" instead of basing their system of values on feelings and actual emotion. And yes, I am Nietzsche's re-incarnation.

We live in a materialistic world. While I am thankful of many of my material possessions like my car, which make my life easier, I wouldn't compare it to a value I hold, like honesty, love for my friends and family and work ethic. These things are what define me and nothing else.

Thats just how I see it though.

Many people have values but they're usually boring and don't grab ratings the way ideologues do so we don't see them very much on tv. Too many people treat ideologies and political parties like their favorite sports teams or game companies. It's always the reff's fault or the other team cheated or some excuse for why your side is right and the other side is wrong. People will defend the insane actions of a political party and demonize the other side as if they kicked the family puppy.

People don't stand for anything because they don't feel like it, to be honest it is pretty easy in the US to share your opinion and do something but would there be change? Doubt it. "People pick a religion and cherry pick what they believe (hating homosexuality) but not cutting off hands/stoning children." That I agree with definitely though, people do tend to pick out the ones that coincidentally help in unnecessary ways, kind of like lying to yourself.

I am unlikeable and not very good looking the movement does not need my face spearheading it. Plus there already was an anti war movement that dissipated. Also I would be kicked around by military men and my hopes of gaining a job could be hurt. At-least I am speaking up online rather than allow an ominous silence to engulf the discussion as our military butchers the innocent and our troops fight for the biggest nothing in history.

.. so you uestion peoples morals for not doing acting out against certain things..... but you let yourself slide because 'youre not good looking'. that is a terrible excuse. why do you look down at others then do the exact same as them? and dont act like creating a thread on Offtopic is doing something remotely like protesting. Dont you think these people youre looking down upon maybe have the same thoughts as you? "im not good looking... i couldnt start a protest..... what can i do?" just because theyre not setting themselves on fire doesnt mean they are not thinking in their heads about these things.

I do not think people are dumb, just corrupt especially the media that claims to be liberal. Where are those in Hollywood against President Obomber, only a couple said they were disappointed. As noted earlier the entertainment industry serves to perpetuate the military industrial complex now. Look at Katy Perry's new video promoting enlistment.

Exactly, especially in the wealthy nations. I would say 10% of people in this country are evil the ones that run and operate the media, mainstream films, wallstreet, the banks, etc. 88% are the robots taught to support the biggest nothing in history and around 2% like me actually have values. The reason I respect the man who set himself ablaze was because he showed you do not need talent, skill, etc. to become a Christ figure in the sense that you cure the people of their greed momentarily and help spur the protests.

heres a reminder for you... the media is a business. they say whatever keeps the people listening. if talking about snowcones and lollypops got viewers, theyd talk about it. but what keeps people listening is shock stories and headlines. so they report on that. Why does the media not get footage of the war like during the Vietnam war? Because our media is with the government and on a leash. I am not saying that those in Hollywood are different in personhood but they are certainly different in status, they should be consistent in their beliefs and not close their mouths just because President Obomber gave destruction a face life. When they cease to use their position to advance their beliefs like they previously did it makes them appear to be only going with the flow and not standing for anything.

no offence but youre clearly in your early teen years. you keep refering to these 'others' as bad guys. governments, celebrities, media, basically anyone who isnt you. let me remind you everyone is human and makes decisions based on their own factors. like celebraties for example.... you really think people who are constantly in the papers read by MILLIONS will want to publicily rebel against another high profile person? to cause harm to his own reputation, maybe put off film heads because they think he speaks out too much, people will be less likely to hire a contrevesial star. whereas you, a young kid, speaking on a computer, basically have nothing to prove to anyone. im sure if everything you said was picked up by the papers you would be VERY careful of what came out of your mouth, it anything at all, to avoid controversy in the first place.

I understand what you are saying atleast I think I do, why did these "stars" have these views earlier than though? Also I would understand a young actor trying to make his/her way into the industry straying from controversy. However I can not stand men who have already made it, big "stars" who in what you describe have the colour of green in their heart... I mean they are already bloody rich. Also I am pretty sure a George Clooney or Sean Penn would still find work if they spoke out against our country. I do not really believe Hollywood is a major problem in the grand scheme of things so I do not want to transform this discussion into about them when they are just part of a web of corruption involving the banks, media, wall street, government etc.

It's an older generation imposing their beliefs on each passing generation. With each new one, a few of those beliefs are lost and more and more broad thinking and selfless acts become more widespread through that gen, like how the current generation is much less racist than our grandparents, and I'm sure each generation after us will be less so. Eventually we'll reach a point where we'll be able to live in relative peace through equality and thinking of the masses and not of the individual, but until then, all we can do is deal with it.

Morals and values don't exist. They are products of the human mind invented to fix what people assume are problems.

There are certain morals that humans maintain which are most likely nothing more than evolutionary traits.
