Desensitization and a culture based on greed.ghoklebutterYa, yet we are supposed to feel bad for people who live for nothing. In-fact the media glorifies individuals who succeed at living for nothing (greed, fame, power) rather than equality, efficiency and the betterment of humanity. I have a mountain of respect for the protester who immolated himself a while back. I refuse to respect most of the authority in this country or the pseudo-rebels who hold back progress.

I know, right? It's a miserable status quo for sure. Very few people care about empathy these days. And people only act morally for the sake of being rewarded or avoiding legal punishment, effectively forsaking altruism in society.
I think it can be changed, though. It's certainly not impossible.
We live in a materialistic world. While I am thankful of many of my material possessions like my car, which make my life easier, I wouldn't compare it to a value I hold, like honesty, love for my friends and family and work ethic. These things are what define me and nothing else.
Thats just how I see it though.
People would rather be sheep and follow trends, than be wolves and set their own.foxhound_foxThis, pretty much. People, especially on the internet, seem to be incapable of thinking for themselves.
it does mean starting threads on a gaming forum though.having values doesn't mean going out and starting a riot, you edgy teenager, you.

I am of the belief that all people are by nature a sinful people. As such I am never surprised when the sinner sins.mindstormExactly, especially in the wealthy nations. I would say 10% of people in this country are evil the ones that run and operate the media, mainstream films, wallstreet, the banks, etc. 88% are the robots taught to support the biggest nothing in history and around 2% like me actually have values. The reason I respect the man who set himself ablaze was because he showed you do not need talent, skill, etc. to become a Christ figure in the sense that you cure the people of their greed momentarily and help spur the protests.

I know people are dynamic and peoples minds change but I would think people considered something other than their own benefit when making moral decisions? Where are all the antiwar protests? Where was the Tea Party during Bush? Why do people not stand for anything? People pick a religion and cherry pick what they believe (hating homosexuality) but not cutting off hands/stoning children.FlippyMittens
Why would anyone follow morals? What good have they brought to us as a species?
It's an older generation imposing their beliefs on each passing generation. With each new one, a few of those beliefs are lost and more and more broad thinking and selfless acts become more widespread through that gen, like how the current generation is much less racist than our grandparents, and I'm sure each generation after us will be less so. Eventually we'll reach a point where we'll be able to live in relative peace through equality and thinking of the masses and not of the individual, but until then, all we can do is deal with it.
Morals and values don't exist. They are products of the human mind invented to fix what people assume are problems.
There are certain morals that humans maintain which are most likely nothing more than evolutionary traits.
