is it because they're afraid of offending someone by saying "Christmas"?I say that at work because of that reason. No way in knowing who will get offended or not, better to be on the safe side
if so, grow up.v61k
Some say it for that reason. But it is eaiser just to say happy holidays and be talking about christmas or whatever.
Happy holidays!

Yep, like me, for example: Happy holidays.
If I told someone Merry Christmas and they got offended, I'd say Then I hope you don't have a merry christmas. Just the nerve of people these days... I hate happy holidays.Sexy_Pirate
Happy Holidays!
I don't think it's so much offending someone as it is because it won't mean anything to them. If someone told you happy Hanukkah (sp?), it wouldn't mean anything to you since you don't celebrate that holiday. I guess it's nice to have someone's best wishes on that day, but generally the day is associated with the celebration.
I don't really care either way

true.
What they could say is...
I don't celebrate christmas but thanks! I hope you have a merry christmas too.
instead of something more jerkish

Or you could just say Happy Holidays, it gets the exact same point across without assuming everyone is christian?Ben Stein has his head on straight about this.
"I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat. "

Considering the fact, that just within the time-span of 24 hours of today and tomorrow, their are at least 3 different holidays that take place (1. Christmas, 2. Boxing Day and 3. Kwanzaa), of which does not count "New Year's" (well, among others, unless your Chinese, that is) that is just week away from today, just kinda of makes things lot easier and shorter to just say "Happy Holidays," especially if you do not know the person's preference.
