3rd world is a terrible term imo, a lot of people, mostly americans or europeans (sorry guys, but its true) think that third world countries mean death, poverty, plagues and infrahumans conditions on every corner.

and that is just such a wrong concept, take costa rica or panama for example, 2 of the most developed (I think they are actually THE most developed) latinamericans countries, both considered to be third world. costa rica has a better life expectancy than that of the US, and a better healthcare system which is even recognized worldwide, plus theres a 97% literacy rate (only 3% of the population is analphabet) and its one of the safest latin americans countries and in overall its a great country, better than most "1st world" countries.

now look at czech republic, considered to be 1st world, yet there is a disturbing number of people starving in the country and extreme poverty.

be honest ot, what do you think about when you hear "3rd world country"?

most people dont even know what 3rd world means. 3rd world was primarily used to define non aligned countries, 1st world were capitalist and 2nd world were soviets. but some genius started spreading the word that 3rd world meant "poor country"

Because "1st world" countries want to paint you a bad picture so that you feel all warm and fuzzy that you live in the "1st world" country and ignore the huge gaping flaws that your superior country possesses, sometimes even more so than the "3rd world".

I've been to Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Bahrain, Egypt and several other third world countries. There's a bit more poverty in them ,but they're not nightmarish bad either. but generally the reason why they're looked down upon is the percieved or real increased poverty and uncleanliness seen in all of them. Frankly - setting aside personal freedoms - i could live in any of the third world countries i've visited. but then again i was raised in one for a while as well.

This.... "This term, when used today, generally denotes countries that have not "developed" to the same levels as OECD countries, and which are thus in the process of "developing"." is how the term is used today.

Yeah, the terms 1st, 2nd, and 3rd world countries are kind of a left over from the Cold war. However the UN does rank countries by their Human Developement Index.

On it the Czech Republic ranks 28 while Costa Rica ranks 64.

Did your "project" even touch on any of the variables taken into account by the UN? Because according to them the Czech Republic ranks a lot higher than Costa Rica for a multitude of reasons. This doesn't mean that Costa Rica is a bad place to live, however when compared to other nations it falls somewhere in the upper middle.

When I think of a third world country, I think of a place with a large workforce, possibly over-populated, and low wages per capita.

All countries have a poor part to them, its just what sounds more appealing. I don't think lowly of third world countries its just what catches peoples interest more. I'm from Eastern Europe (Serbia) which has tons of poor and impoverished countries with many many issues that are going on politically as well. Think of it this way would you rather vacation in somewhere like Italy or a small and poor country in central America?

I stand corrected. Though Costa Rica does have a low GDP and a high percentage of agricultural workers, which is why it's considered third world or "developing" in current day terms.

however the poverty rate in costa rica is lower than that of the US, 5 to 8% of the costa rican population is in poverty, while 14% of the american population is in poverty. and yeah thats why its considered a developing country (which is the correct term and its not despective at all nor does it gives you a bad image about the country) but I just got this way because you pretty much stated that every 3rd world country is a crap hole with serious problems.

be honest ot, what do you think about when you hear "3rd world country"?

lightleggy

tbh, I think it means a country that is not Europe or North America :P

seriously, though, the classification sucks...and for the most part it is pretty bogus.

Basically:

1st World = Nukes

2nd World = Would-be first world but no nukes? Idunno Ive never heard of a "2nd world country"

3rd World = where non-whites come from :P I know it soudns bad, but it seems to generally be true.

too true

dont neglect small and/or poor countries. The people are generally nicer there in my experience, and as a traveller your currency is going to worth a lot more. And unless it has a high population, the sights will be gorgeous.

Just make sure it is safe, and more importantly there is no organized crime or militants. it's one thing to go to a country that is known for pickpocketers, and quite another to go to a country known for its drug cartels.

But as a general rule, no one should avoid a poor and/or developing country simply because of that.
