Supply and demand. As long as people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars to watch a game for 2 hours, athletes will be payed millions. Don't blame the athletes, blame the public.

Not many people can be a doctor. But even less people can be an athletic freak of nature like Lebron James. Soo that might be one reason.

Because the business is profitable. It's like actors. Movies potentially make a lot of money, so actors get paid a lot more. Sports teams and sponsors make tons of money from sports, so the athletes get paid a lot. And the athletes aren't easily replaceable. In any business that makes a lot of money and the workers aren't easily replaceable, they tend to get paid a lot so they don't move away and the company can keep making money.

Generate millions + supply and demand.

Whether or not you believe it, there aren't a lot of people capable of being professional athletes.

Really? Think about how many people go to watch these games, and how much they are willing to pay to get tickets. Professional sports are a product, and the cost of that product is dictated by what people are willing to pay. The revenues are then distributed amongst the owners and athletes according to their contracts... It has nothing to do with importance. If a doctor could operate on 20,000 people at once and have it televised to millions he'd make a lot more money too.

Really? Doctors are a volume business. Take a pain doctor, for example.

If you get a prescription for pain meds, that $100 U.S. just for a 5-minute visit.

One doctor I know is pulling down over $2,400 per hour: that's $19,200 per day.:o

Doctors make a lot of money. In fact I think on average, Doctor (surgeons to be exact , especially the more specialized ones) are the highest paid profession. Sure there are actors who make millions and all that, but the majority don't make anywhere near that amount. The ones you see on TV rich as hell are a very small percentage. Same applies with other professions like sports and music. On the other hand, practically every surgeon in the US makes $200k+ and that only goes up depending on specialty, experience, resume, and so on.

I remember saying the same thing you just said a few months ago in one of my blogs. Yeah the teachers, doctors, etc could use a little bit more money. All they do is entertain, same with music artists and everything else. They get paid by their sponsors like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor and other things. The doctors, teachers, police, etc, are the ones that help. Dwayne Wade pulled off a 360 dunk, that's good and allbut that doesn't help this person get a new kidney. It's business though.

Because people are paying to watch the athletes, leading to the teams and organizations earning millions upon millions of dollars. If no one watched sports, they would be making terrible pay, but sports are ridiculously popular, thus leading to higher paid athletes. Also, some of the best athletes make more money off of endorsements than they do from the sport they play.

Players get paid a lot because they're performing a service for the millions of people that attend and watch on television. If you could flip a million burgers at a time, at thousands of McD's locations at once, they would pay you a lot of money.

Because they are individually responsible for hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of fans all of whom pay to go see them, or to buy their shirt, or buying stuff made by their sponsors who they do ads for. That raises an awful lot of cash, and the western world has never been partial to giving money away to the needy. If playing soccer for an hour and a half earns you millions, so be it.

Not exactly true in all cases - many of them play in stadiums or arenas that are funded with taxpayer dollars.

If all goes well. The city of Glendale and Arizona taxpayers have yet to see the full $180 million they fronted for the Coyotes' arena, and their entire future their is in jeopardy depending on what happens this offseason.

Being the best doctor only gets you paid marginally more than other doctors of your level. Being the best athlete gets fans crazy over you and gets you paid millions because of your reputation and skills. That's basically it.

Because theyearn a % of the revenue that the sport brings in
-NFL and NBA players collectively bargained to get x% of revenue

They 'make so much' because we pay them
-through ticket sales, jerseys, or watching commercials (TV contracts)

What would you like to happen with all that revenue...let the rich owner keep it all :?

This and the low pay of others are totally separate issues

It's entertainment that an insane amount of people watch/pay for. Also A few hundred individuals in each sport may get to play at the highest level (where they make the most cash cause things go way down when your in the minors) for perhaps less than 10 years depending on the sport. It's pretty wild how very little people have a chance at even getting close to such a level.

The earn millions of dollars because they bring in millions of dollar to their sport. It has nothing to do with the societal value of what they provide. People like to watch and go to NBA games. That generates their salaries.

They generate massive amounts of revenue. In my opinion I think that fighters are the only ones that should be paid insane amounts of money because they always face serious injury and they have to dedicate their entire lives to giving and taking physical punishment.

I'm taking about those players on the NBA, for example. Some of them earn millions of dollars. And for what? Because they're good at it? I mean, sure, they're good, but their playing sports doesn't do anything important other then to entertain. But look at doctors, or nurses, for example. These people save lives, and make other poeple's lives better. IMO their services are more important. What do you think? Is it unfair for athletes to learn lots of money, vs doctors who may not?

Because the NBA has to do something with the amount of money they bring in. If the players were only payed 35-40k a piece then the team owners would all be trillionaires.

If NBA players were only paid $40,000, they'd all quit and go play in Europe. The league would have to find people who would play for that amount and they'd suck. No one would buy tickets and the NBA would go out of business.
