It's a thing that's quite common among different species. It's how perpetuation of the species works. The dominant males usually get first pick of viable females, so if it's always the stronger ones mating, future offspring benefit from superior genes. In other words, their instinct it telling them, "If I don't get that bitch pregnant, that weak ass lion will beat me to it!"

Juvenile Lions are independant after about the age of 2. At which point they work together in groups of up to 4 to catch prey.
Then they will work together to kill a Lion with an established pride. Then kill all the cubs. Then fight amongst themselves until a dominant lion emerges to control the new pride.
A Lion with a darker main indicates strength due to the extra heat absorbed by the darker colour.
Female lions are not picky.
