I'm in this age group myself and sometimes, I just don't understand my friends. They make fun of me occasionally for having an older Blackberry phone (without a touch screen) and I know they're not being completely serious, but it just irritates me. I even see some of my friends who have older phones themselves say that their phones suck.

It's not only with phones or other physical objects either. Yesterday, I was listening to some older Eminem songs like Mockingbird and my friend jokingly said "Um, what year are we in again?" WTH? Why does it matter how old a song is? A lot of old music is 10 times better than the crappy pop songs of today anyway.

So why do you think teenagers are so obsessed with having everything new?

I agree completely with what you said. I guess it's just a matter of showing off and looking "cool" really.

They're are not thankful for the things their parents get them and how hard their parents are working hard for them.

Because they do whatever the television tells them to. Minions of Marketing. Corporate slaves. And high five for the Blackberry thing.

The reasons teenagers want new stuff are probably the same as everyone else's. Integrating new technology into society is not a modern trend. People have been doing it for a long time. The difference between now and hundreds of years ago is the internet. With that, information in general spreads faster than it ever has and with that, things such as new media and technology make their way around the world in a fraction of the time it used to. Since that is now possible, the rate of newly released products is increasingly hand in hand with it and what is new right now will be old news in half a day.

I guess what you said about generalizing is true, but like I said, I knew he was sorta joking but it annoys me because he's not the only one who does this. I've seen many different people act this way many times, so I think it's safe to say that the majority of teenagers view the latest items as necessities, which is not true at all.

It is a side effect of capitalism. The drive for individual gain of money and material goods is considered a good thing. That said, it is only natural for people to want to fit in. This is one way people do it.

Also, people of all ages think that having the newest and best materials will give them happiness. Which is dumb as some study have shown that it's experiences that make them happy, not materials. http://unclutterer.com/2010/04/05/stuff-wont-make-you-happy-experiences-will/

I'm a teen, and I see the same thing going on. Especially with music, and I just don't get it. I mean, when you compare Justin Bieber with, say, Led Zeppilin, it makes you wonder WTH is wrong with everybody.

I pretty much agree with this. Wanting to have new things all the time doesn't really go away with age. I mean, give me one experience in your life that would make you say to yourself: "I don't want new, nice things anymore!"

if they somehow manage to have a valid point then fairs but what i tend to see is that kids make the same complaints about their generation/age group that they can apply to every age group/ generation.

upgraded from a Tracphone to a low-end flip phone. I see it everywhere to be honest, people in my neighborhood would buy the newest gadgets like the newest iphone and ipad and then dispose of via Goodwill because they always want to have the newest stuff on day one.

I never did. I used a cheapie motorola cellphone until 10th or 11th grade. Then I got a Samsung slide phone and still have it. I've had the computer I'm using now for like four years, and I have never owned a brand new TV, my current one was a hand-me-down from my boyfriend. Clothes are one thing I always hated buying new. Especially girl clothes in this city. There's not very many places to shop, so EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME. It's ridiculous. Everybody has the same basic pieces and it looks really stupid. Yes it's fun to have the new thing, and when everyone else is a spoiled little sh*t, you have to be too to fit in. But just ignore them, if it's not a matter of life and death, it's not worth worrying about having the newest thing.

They have to be told what to think, so they must conform to whatever popular trend is in effect. Don't worry, most of them will grow out of it once they enter the real world and begin to discover their own voice. Edit: I also lol'd at the idea of cellphones in high school. When I was in high school, there was perhaps 2-5% of the student population who had a cellphone. My how much times have changed.

Well, I just bought an used copy of Crysis 2, so obviously we don't :P. Honestly though, I do get what you're talking about especially with the music, I don't understand why listening to a 5 year old song is so bad.
