I know they're just "games," but just the fact that we all get entertainment out ofkilling people in video games confuses me. The other day I was playing GTA and was laughing as I ran over people on the sidewalk. Why are we this way?!?!? :P

But its not really about video games... it's about your conscience. I don't know why people that aren't mods act like mods.Nice topic. Wrong forum

Humans are savage in nature?
As for myself, I like side-scrollers and 2D fighters(if you couldn't tell from my sig). But FPS games are an addiction, but hyper-realism like most hardcore fanboys isn't something I look for. I like Halo, Duke Nukem, and Timesplitters type series more than Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc. And I always loved the GTA series not because of all the killing(I ended all GTAs, no codes and more than once) but because I like crime/mob stories(even though I'm not getting Mafia II).
I don't know honestly. Why does society have such a fetish for violence and death, yet when faced with the prospects of our own mortality, fear tends to take over in our minds?
Why are we this way?!?!? :PBecause we know it's not real, now if you laughed at seeing real footage of someone die then I'd be worried.rubber-chicken
It's ust fun. There is no "why". It's like asking why gravity exists. Our brains are wired that way.Head_of_games
Our brains are not wired for violent video games.... But I do believe society has desensitized itself to violence in a detrimental way. When I was younger I scoffed at the notion that the violent games and movies I was brought up on could have negative effects, but I'm not to sure about it anymore.
Because it allows us to experience that vein of the human experience without real-world consequences? Violent conflict is an integral part of human history... and the only way we can avoid it in the future is to learn from the past... and video games give us the means to experience real-life things without consequence, making us less likely to want to do such things in the real world (unless you are someone with a psychological disorder that makes you forget the difference between reality and fiction).
wrong forum!
put on topic the games are fun, i mean where else could you steal a car, run over 100 people and beat up a cop lol
How about why do we like any form of entertainment where people kill people? It's sick and wrong. But we love it. Why?
Because video games are the spawn of Satan and corrupt our minds and turn us evil.

We must find Jack Thompson and get his assistance. He was right all along!
[QUOTE="ImaPirate0202"]But in games you actually assume the role of the killer. In movies you just kind of watch it happen. Both have the same outcome: You like it.:PWhy the focus on videogames? The same is done with movies, music art blah, blah, blah...

Unless it's a friend or a lover of the main protagonist, then it's sad. :(

But in games you actually assume the role of the killer. In movies you just kind of watch it happen. Both have the same outcome: You like it.:P Hmmm, say now, you have a point!Because we are naturaly violant, i mena if we brought back the Roman Gladitorial fights *crosses fingers hoping they do*, they would be an instant hit. Violance is as much part of our nature as reproducing.
Its instinctive. Young children wan't to play with toy guns. Its a symbol of power. Hence their popularity amoungst males. Its just like girls playing with baby dolls and prams etc. its programmed in.
My theory is that we release our instincts that we hide. Humans used to hunt for food, protect themselves from predators (I mean saber tooth tigers and stuff, not hunter tribes from another galaxy) and do other violent and bloody things. But within a few thousand years we changed to a peaceful lifestyle and started to avoid violence almost completely. Only a small amount of us even get to hunt or fight in real life.
I believe that this change was just to sudden to be integrated into our nature. So now we have this great interest in violence and death.
Why do we laugh at shows where guys get hit in the nuts?
Maybe we just enjoy other people getting hurt when there's no real consequences.
Because it's fun.
To all the people saying, "wrong forum", it doesn't matter now. The thread has over 40 posts.
i understand what you mean. i laugh when i shoot someone with a shotgun in COD and they go flying to the other side of the room
we like doing things in video games that we can't do in real life, like killing people or driving all over the road, going off ramps in the cars, using magic, anything really. plus killing people is FUN.
Because from a young age we tend to have swords made from sticks etc and it makes us feel like big powerful kick ass dudes. I mean for sure we wouldnt like to do it in real life but thats the beauty with games; its a form of escapism. I will say the COD MW2 level of killing those hostages was rather strong on my mind. Its different to GTA since that has an almost comical view on the whole thing.
