Short answer: Some will, some won't
Long answer: School teaches you to take initiative for your own learning in what you are interested in. Hence it is usually broad to begin with, and gradually gets specialised as you progress. When you reach about the end of high school, then it starts to really apply.
It is to make you a better person. Or else we might just start saying the world is flat and burn some witches.lycrof
What's wrong with that? I'm not a witch so I don't care... wait... that means if you do care... A WITCH!

Still got love for the under world, no disrespect.
It sure will, even if it's subject matter you don't apply in your career. Everything you do will exercise either a physical skill, an intellectual skill, or a combination of both. You'll develop cognitive abilities like memorization, creativity, and critical thinking; life skills like time management, public speaking, and social development; physical skills like endurance and coordination; and you'll learn about a great many different subjects which will help you determine how you want to go about making your contribution to society when you finish your studies. Education is what makes it possible for human society to advance and better itself. Be grateful for the opportunity to receive it.pianisthits the nail on the hammer.
I've seen people earning masters degrees in college and are yet as dumb as a brick wall...now it seems its mostly about passing a test...not all learning.AtomicBaconBits
They aren't dumb... I'm sure they're well-versed in the field for which they were awarded the degree. But intelligence is indeed different from knowledge. The most successful individual is one who is intelligent and possesses a work ethic. Possessing intelligence and being lazy will get you nowhere. Possessing a work ethic but limited intelligence will likely get you a decent job, but you will likely have trouble when you are faced with unfamiliar situations and forced to learn quickly or improvise to develop a solution.
The basics are enough, but they take it to a level where they make you believe that you will once use all that in your life. I say keep the kids who actually want to be something, and let go the ones who don't.Ilived
if you went by that philosophy, my school would be empty in about a week

Young people need guidance - fact. And by young people, I mean those who are not yet adults. Letting young people ruin their lives by dropping out of school because they THINK it is good for them when it isn't is terribly irresponsible, and has the potential to lead to all sorts of problems down the road - increased unemployment and crime, for instance.

I'd lower the age. Some no-hopers just ruin other childrens' education. They're not worth that.I'd lower the age. Some no-hopers just ruin other childrens' education. They're not worth that.SolidSnake35
They're only no-hopers if they're ruined as youngsters... adults really do define what becomes of most kids. Even those with negative predispositions can turn out well with the proper environment.

Ruined by bad parenting maybe, but that's a separate issue. If parents want their children to get an education, they need to do a decent job of raising them. I suppose you shouldn't 'punish' the child for that but it's not like they try at school anyway. Most just get apprentiships that don't need qualifications, as far as I'm aware.[QUOTE="Ilived"]The basics are enough, but they take it to a level where they make you believe that you will once use all that in your life. That stuff still happens anyway. It all depends on the parents.

From what I've seen, schooling has limited ability to turn around a "bad-seed", so a child with a poor upbringing will usually be unaffected by the positive envioronment of school, and grow up to become a troublesome adult.
