As the consumers of entertainment....why do we settle for the lowest denominator of entertainment? How are reality shows still on TV and even worse...celeb reality? Why is the music played over the airwaves the average, formula ridden mediocre music? Most movies are now recycled plots with a few changes or worse remakes of movies that aren't that old to begin with. (I'd mention games sequels with little innovation over lesser known innovative games but I don't want to go off topic. Just be aware we settle for that as well.)

Why do we spend our money as a group on bottom feeders?

Why would you assume that because I was defending myself against your generalization that I have no thoughts?

There are a lot of idiots in the world, that's why people 'settle for less'. And they can do it for all I care, they aren't hurting me, I'll stick to what I like and the masses can continue to consume their drivel.

Collectively "we" are freaking morons. "We" need simple soundbites and bright colours flashing in a phantasmagorical fashion as to tap into our hypothalamus and directly create the illusion that we are quadraspazzed on a life-glug waiting for the next epileptic neuro shotgun shell to be unloaded through our eyes, ears and as of next year our *** *****.

I guess, maybe, people who aren't that interested in movies, music, games etc. would sooner go for the safer option that follows the generic formula rather than take a risk. And maybe, even if they did find something better, they wouldn't really care due to their lack of interest in the first place.

Well I guess they go by ratings, and strive for a profit so maybe they are taking the path of least effort for the profit? Sorta assuming there are allot of bottom feeders to take advantage of in some markets and they can get away with lower quality, etc. Things are so fragmented these days.

Perhaps I just don't understand people that think that way. Then again many would rather eat Mcdonalds burgers than filet mignon.

General idea is that entertainment is popular because the most people like it, not because people like it the most. Networks make they're money by pulling in lots of people ence they play the most popular stuff. As you can only like something if you've experianced it in someway the variety in popular media gets smaller and smaller due to the viscous cycle. When you then factor in the idea of what the majority buys is good even though the majority are not experts in the medium. This results in people following what is popular and has the biggest marketing budgets because they know no better. This is then made worse by the most popular stuff getting the biggest marketing budgets. . The moral of this story is never listen to the majority because they're idiots.

As far as i'm concerned: Thats what people in this day and age in general want. They actually want those reality shows, those Celeb realities, and they enjoy thier formula ridden mediocre music. The same likely goes for movies and their recycled plots. Its all about the numbers/ratings that tell the studios what to give to thier audience. And the number and ratings tell them that in order to thrive, you gotta give the people the mundane crap. The people who would prefer the more meaningful and deeper TV shows are pretty much in the minority which means that all the stuff that we deem good tends to get hammered into oblivion. Its why wonderful shows like nBSG only last 4 seasons and why "The Bachelor" can air for more then 10 seasons. >_>

Tv = Stupid taste. Remember that most of Tv is young viewers.

Music = Lack of knowing better. Not many people are really that into music.

This is not really hard to understand. It dose not even lead to much of a topic (lol, no offence). The only real answer is to be cynical, it's the only outlook you can have.

I think its maybe because its what a lot of people expect from entertainment these days... And I've come to notice that, when they expect it, they don't want it to change... The masses tend to not like change when it comes, which is why unfortunately, there is plot recycles in movies, the same mediocre music on the airwaves...they like the security of consistent mediocricy (which to them is actually entertainment, shame..).

Thats how I see it anyway, maybe I'm wrong.

The term "common" is the key here. Some cute, young musical starlet who writes short, five-chord songs about break-ups and partying with her girlfriends is going to have a lot wider appeal than a Swedish metal band with complex blast beats, wildly arpeggiating guitar solos and six-minute epics about mythological deities (Odin bless them). One could draw similar comparisons to the television, film and video game industries. Average people have average tastes, and so they like average entertainment that provides moderate distraction from average things. They aren't going to think about their entertainment long enough to analyze why it was good or bad, they're just going to quickly figure out what it was they liked or didn't like about it, and then shuffle it in with all the other average stuff that fills their lives. That's why sequels and "copycat titles" do so well, even though it is widely understood that they almost always are going to suck. However, I don't think you can fault a person with only moderate interest in the creative arts for not being picky about their choices in entertainment. Sure, to the more discerning audience member, the average person's tastes are terrible, but that's why we support the smaller artists who we like, and why those artists will always have a market with us. Believe me, I f***ing hate John Mayer and Sean Paul and Panic-At-The-Stupid-F***ing-Disco just as much as the next guy, but I do know that's just what "average" sounds like. And if we distinguished types really want to see quality entertainment reach the masses, then it's up to us to share it with them personally (my mom loves Kenney Chesney and Tool -- you're welcome).

if you get games, movies, and other crap just because other people do, you are sad and pathetic.

sorry but you are a drone and you need to see things for you self and not jump on the bandwagon, thats how crappy stuff gets good sales when they don't deserve credit for *****y effort.

this is NO attempt at trolling or flaming, just an awakening to people who are senseless

Well put in my opinion. :D I suppose that people like being around familiar environments and so they settle for more formulaic forms of entertainment rather than discovering different types.

People will ignore their ears with music sometimes because what they're hearing is not common. I did this as a kid as I started listening to new stuff, I would be embarrassed, or think "this is awful, but I will keep it anyway" then find my self loving it a week later. New is bad. New is hard to accept, even if you like it.

I think that has more to do with the sheer volume of other content. Exceptional content is by definition going to occur less often.

I'm not going to disagree with that. But look how popular the lesser entertainment is in comparison to the better entertainment. TV shows that have any intelligence or wit attached get cancelled while reality shows live on.

I don't know about that I could rattle off a lot of good content that is quite popular. Mythbusters is epically popular.

because we as a whole don't invest in entertainment like we use to. these days everything is pirated. thats the main reason for the decline in quality. industry execs are losing alot of money to piracy and feel if they carbon copy something that made money....they can see a profit.

Because capitalism demands you makes the max amount of profit possible, which is only achieved by appealing to the lowest common denominator. That's what "the masses" want.

We go for what we know and the creators give us that. Why: I am not sure but I think it has to do with "fearing" the unknown.

People like familiarity. To go off topic, people would sooner buy the new Halo / Zelda game than say, the newest innovative game to come out, solely due to the fact the game has the 'Zelda' or 'Halo' tag. That's what they like, so why would they go for something different? Awful mentality to have in my opinion. I don't see why people don't go for new things, take risks...

a general rule of thumb for art is that the best of it is more demanding on the audience. however, people have a natural inclination towards laziness and prefer more passive forms of these mediums. im sure most people could follow a symphony or the nuances of a well made movie if they really wanted to put the effort in. however, most people will take cheap thrills instead because they take require less of the audience.

Its annoying that factual programmes are relegated to lesser channels while the majority watch soaps and Z listers doing the reality circuit.

Games are better than ever today :/

Anyway, it was the same back then, pop is still pop, there were people back then who hated the popular music on the radio just like there are some of us who do now, and those who dont. they had sucky shows, music aswell, the sucky ones wernt popular and are the ones we all forgotten today

Every show on television, every movie that comes out will not be revolutional, but like those back then, we have our gems, one thing i do not like, is ignoring those gems and damning the entire generation.

Grindhouse foevaaaaa 8)

People often used the same plots back then aswell and im sure the adults were used to it, thing is, most of us myself included like to praise a certain time of entertainment, i praise the 90's as if it was all glorious, as if all films and music were top knotch, when they wernt its just the fact that i grew up in those times and linked a lot of good memories with those films/music, making them a "glorious" time, not too mention everything seemed so "new" back then, because we were dumb and not used to the "Formula" or standard in films & music, Horror films are as generic as they were back then, you have the good ones and the sucky ones

If i was born in 2003 and was currently growing up on the music on the radio now ? im pretty damn sure i would love it, ive watched my little siblings, and cousins they walk around singing these songs they cant get out of their heads just like i did when i was their age

Meh. I only buy/watch/listen to thing I like. Radio-wise I usually listen to talk shows more than the music ones.
