Why does america have so many states?

As a humble australian chook farmer I am often very busy at work stopping dingos from eating my lively hood. I cant spare a sydney minute to learn all the states within america. I am often confused when I hear the news talking about the daily massacre of shootings within your country and the states in which they occur. So can you give this ol digger the dinky die on the reason why all you mates have so many states?

Why does Australia have so few territories?? Or are they states too? And daily massacres of shootings? I'm not 100% sure what your talking about there.Aft3rBurn3r

We started out with 13.

It took 183 years to get to 50 states.

There's a lot to be gained from transitioning from a territory to a state. They would have been like an island otherwise, having to do everything on their own.

Mostly it came out of Western Expansion and a sense that America was not one Federal Nation, but a loose affiliation of mostly sovereign states. Boundries were drawn with religion, geography, inner politics and foreign affairs all being the main factors. Slowly, over time, America has seen a power shift from States to Federal government. I don't want to get into why, it's complicated ...

Because there were the original thirteen..then people started moving west....and then in order to become a state they needed a certain number of people living within the state..then they had to submit a request for statehood....then we made the lousiana purchase...and those lands were then made into seperate territories...then they became states...then there was the war with Mexico...and we got texas...and then mexico ceded the rest of the west..which then got settled with the help of the transcontinental railroad....we could've had mexico as well..but due to the balance kept in the senate between slave and free states..and the Missouri Compromise line..they didn't...then the others got settled and such throughout history and became part of the US...

Well, many of our states are the size of most countries in the world. Thus it is easier to have many smaller govts running things than one huge govt trying to control everything. Although if Obama has his way it will probably be this way someday...

P.S. We have so many shootings because we are a nation of pimps. and PIMPIN AINT EASY

Humanity is a territorial species, most people like having boundries and America was built on people being able to rule themselves in a way so it is very logical that people would want to have lots of seperate states because it seperates one group of people from another. Why do you think you have property?
