It's the same thing in Star Trek. English is the official language of the universe.

One of the little robots injected the microbes into Crichton's foot when he was first pulled onto the spaceship. Before that, we heard the other aliens speaking in truly bizarre voices and languages.

How come they all speak English in Sargate though? You'd think you couldn't just go to a planet and then meet other people speaking English. Plenty of shows try and explain why language isn't an issue. Stargate just ignores it.

It's one of those things everyone in that entire galaxy is given basically from birth. Except for that one floaty girl who just possess the ability to learn a whole language in about an hour, but never encounters anyone speaking a language she doesn't already know after she shows up and learns english.

It's a dramatic device; while it would be realistic for every first contact to involve months and years of language acquisition and cultural acclimatization, it wouldn't make for very riveting TV. Edit: They also made fun of this fact in the parody episode "Woormhole X-treme", where there was an in-world low budget Stargate TV series.

Why they speak english:

Characters from foreign countries usually speak english in a foreign accent instead of their native tongue in movies, because subtitles don't sit well with audiences. It's sort of a cop out, but not a big deal because there's an unspoken agreement between audiences and directors that states: "we, the audience, don't want to read and in return, we promise not to make a big fuss about you dumbing down society and culture."

if they did not speak English how could you watch the show.

you are complaining about what?

if a show is spoken in a language you do not understand you need captioning.

movies and games that have multiple captioning it is fun to run through with the various choices to see the translation.

It's the same thing in Star Trek. English is the official language of the universe.

it's actually the universal translator that is doing the translation on the fly. there are instances where it doesn't work completely because the language is very different and those episodes are quite interesting. I recall on such episode of TNG where Picard had to learn the language of an alien captain.

It's for the same reason that Shepard's ship in ME2 HAS bathrooms but you never actually wander into one and find someone in the act of dropping a smelly load. There's a limit to how much realism people really want in their games/movies/books/etc.

I was going to say "challenge accepted" and provide a list of eps I consider worse, but the list rapidly became unwieldy :(

Thread winner and ender ^^^ -I would like to add that there is also a limit to what the creators want to put into the show (should be more about the message than the actual form) ...and who wants to sit and read all that crap spoken in an annoying language anyways
