What the hell does a hat have to do with this? Why do we take off our hats to salute the flag? What does this mean? Makes no sense.

To me it's a way to show respect, similar to how you would salute a superior officer if you were part of a military branch.

You can just take off your hat? Usually I just rip out my boxers when I have to show respect , I hate showing it because it hurts though.I should try out this hat technique you speak of ...

You're the one who made the thread about not having to eat with forks aren't you? Well yeah. That's why. Society, social norms, it's BAD for me to recieve oral sex from a guy, but not a girl, it's BAD for me to walk around naked, it's BAD for me to do it on the road, it's BAD for me eat with my mouth open, it's BAD for me to urinate in front of people. Society, lame.

When a gentleman "dons" his hat to leave or "doffs" his hat to a lady, his actions are being described by two British colloquialisms that come from contractions of the phrases "do on" meaning "to do", and the Middle English "doffen", which became "don off" meaning "to do off"! Hats are tipped, (or doffed) slightly lifting the hat off your forehead, when meeting a lady (remove your hat if you stop to talk), or to "say" to anyone, male or female - thank you, excuse me, hello, goodbye, you're welcome or how do you do. Tipping of the hat is a conventional gesture of politeness. This hat tipping custom has the same origin as military saluting, which came from the raising of medieval Knights face visors to show friendliness. Hats are worn less now, but at the turn of the 20th century, all adults wore hats whenever they left the house. It was a matter of good personal hygiene, since hats were a protection from industrial dirt. Hats are removed when inside, except for places that are akin to public streets, like lobbies, corridors, and crowded elevators (non-residential). In a public building (where there are no apartments) the elevator is considered a public area. You may choose to remove your hat in a public elevator, but in the presence of a lady your hat must be removed. It's just a way things have always been done. Why do people put their hand in the air and wiggle it to say "hi". Why do people turn their head left and right to say no or up and down to say yes? It's just how things are. Taking your hat off is respectful as is saluting. Looking someone in the eye when they are talking is respectful, etc.

Two different things, communication helps communicate so humans can work together and prosper. Social norms that you must follow are just things people think are right for no reason, "LOLZ TEH RIGHT EAR IS PIERCED UR GAY!".

I've analyzed this in sociology. In olden times, the custom when greeting an elder or superior was to cut out the top part of your head, grab your brain and tip it towards the person by bowing slightly. This was meant to symbolize respect, devotion and servitude. However this practice quickly died out, as did its practitioners, so a new, less invasive method was invented in which the underlying cultural meaning was preserved whilst avoiding excessive death.

I dunno, maybe because it's easy to do and it shows that we can remove our comfy stuff to be respectful? I dunno.

Well the road thing makes sense. You'll get hit by a car, truck or bus and will likely die.

To answer your question; there are lots of tiny things which show respect. The handshake for example; you always shake with your right hand. Why? Because back when hand shakes were "new", people were using swords as their main weapons of choice, obviously. In using your right hand you're showing that your hand is unavailable to grab your sword and thus you mean no harm = a sign of respect.

As for the hat; removing your hat was a sign that you aren't in a hurry, or intending to depart. You may very well be; but removing your hat simply says "i'm here, i'm listening to you, i'm giving you my attention." Again = respect.

Nowadays all of these things are generic signs of respect with the original meanings long lost; hence why we end up taking our hats off to a flag.

Well, I mean on the sidewalk. I was just referencing the Beatles.
