Why is tipping not applied to all customer service jobs? Why do waiters get singled out? Should we be paying lower prices on say clothing, and tipping the sales associates for good service when we buy a new pair of jeans? Or is there a reason I'm not seeing as to why waiters are in a special category?

it doesn't. people get tipped for almost anything. i get tipped at my job and i'm in retail. people like my customer service so they tip me. the thing is, tipping should be a reward for good service, not something that's expected.

That sort of thinking flies in the face of not getting paid minimum wage. I'm not saying you're wrong, but perhaps the system is.

This. Classical OT.

Waiters appropriately good for what their restaurant is worth should of course be tipped. They try their hardest to serve your meal and bring you what you ask for, come on. You're really looking out for yourself if you plan on going there more than once.

Yea I misread what this thread what about. Mostly my opinion about waiters also applies to other customer service jobs, provided my service doesn't slack off.

I think it's more likely that they think we get paid to do it for them. I don't expect to get tips so I'm mainly just joking around, but I'm a bit surprised some old person hasn't tossed a few pennies my way. :P

I used to do similar things in retail. We were told if we were tipped, to not accept it. If the person insisted, we were told to turn the money into a manager.

There were security cameras everywhere. If they saw you, you'd get in some big trouble. I was only offered a tip one time. I just said no thanks. That was it.

So I spend $20 I owe some stranger $4.00 just for doing there job. But if a spend $100 I now owe him $20. I don't think so. "I just pay the bill" tipping is for **** and suckers. If I get bad services I just complain to the owner and get a discount and the retard server who thinks I owe him a living can get fired. If I was running a restaurant I would have zero tolerance to bad servers. It is in the owners best interest to make sure you leave happy not the servers so you my return in the future. I'm tired of this I have to tip to get good service mentaltay. you don't and should stop and take complaints to management,

If you were running a restaurant, you would want your customers to tip your waiters. I dont think you understand how the food business works at all.

If you can't afford to tip, you probably shouldn't be going out to eat at a restaurant. You can always cook at a home, for cheaper, and no one to tip.

Minimum wage for waiters is lower than other restaurant jobs, because tips usually make up for it. Hell, my brother works at WalMart unloading trucks, but he also works at Gianni's Pizza as a driver. He gets $50 to $80 in tips a night.

WHAT so they can pocket it. OMG if a manager asked for my tip id tell him were to go. and if they fired me. it would be full on war. charge them with theft then every week there car gets vandalized or house or whatever. I'm not even playing that is theft

Not really. Everything about your questions are based on a poor premise. Tipping doesn't get applied to just waiters. Waiters get singled out and are "special" because they nearly always meet FSLA "tipped employee" exemptions. A business model of lower prices on retail products with the expectation of tipping a sales associate could work, but considering retail is more of a "self serve" model, the tipping would require a huge shift of consumer mindset.

I do not care. Go read the min wage laws for servers then tell me they get paid less because they don't. And if the owner dose not pony up the rest if there tips don't equal min wage. that is there problem for working for a crook, not mine.

This is correct. People that say servers don't get minimum wage don't get how it works. The employer has to at least pay you minimum wage if tips don't make up the rest. That doesn't mean you shouldn't tip if the service is good though.

I have done it and that is way I do not tip. Got better things to do with my money then help make some punk better off then me.

Waiters are not the only people who should get tips. Bell hops (if a hotel has one), cabbies, grocery baggers (if the grocery store does not disallow it), food delivery drivers, and hotel/motel maids are just a few of the other types of jobs where people should tip.

It does not, for say,

but waiters are purposely payed less for the expectation of tips unlike other jobs.

I guess restaurant waiters and waitresses give good customer service as their job (the base pay is low, but the expected pay is higher and that is important) while customer service positions do not need to give comparatively good service for their salary. The difference is why a waiter in America gets fifteen percent of the total meal cost and customer service representatives earn their base pay only.

I agree. I also live in Canada and I never understood the requirement to tip waiters. I used to work in a call centre getting paid 10 dollars an hour. That job is a lot harder and more stressful than waiting tables. I obviously didn't get tips. But I was still working in customer service. Waiters get paid by the hour, it shouldn't be "required" to tip them. That being said, I still will leave a tip if the waiter provided exceptional customer service. But I don't tip them for average service.

However, delivery drivers are a different story. Around here at least, they do not get an hourly wage. Delivery costs 4 dollars and that goes to the driver. And that's all that goes to the driver. 10% of their earnings go to their boss every night. So with the cost of gas and maintenance (which the driver needs to pay for since they use their own vehicle) they make very little. If it weren't for tips the job won't be worth it. So I always tip the delivery guy because I know they need it. Waiters don't need it.
