That is why I'm never afraid for him (that and the fact that I'm only on season 3 and I know there's three more seasons so there's no way he's going to die during that time).
It's also interesting that he almost exclusively takes a pistol with him. Anyone with common sense would take a submachine gun as pistol accuracy drops off exponentially after about 15 yards.
He had a bullet proof vest on the whole time with season 4. I think he doesn't now cause y'know... he just got thrown into the whole mess. He doesn't work for CTU anymore does he? 24 has been crap lately....

Discretion or not, when Mr. Bauer is in the thick of it, the ideal CQC weapon would be a accurate SMG with a good rate of fire. Pistols do not cut it.

actually it started slow this season..but the last 3 weeks have been great... I think we're a week or two behind in the UK. It started slightly later because there's a UK-show which was still running. I think the whole "jack has an evil brother" thing was just so absurd. And then his dad's evil too? What are they thinking? Hopefully it'll pick up soon, because the storyline is becoming a little too generic for me. It's like Austin Powers.

After all, one of the reasons why I liked 24 in the first place was because the fighting was portrayed (relatively) realistically (relative to some other shows out there)... At least the hand to hand combat (which was shown as ugly, gritty, dirty and fast (as it is in real life) as opposed to other shows where every fight is like a kung fu//boxing match with ridiculous blocking, jump kicks etc)..

Hmm well I do find it strange, considering that they have a guns expert on site at all times... Maybe it's the producers' decision, to make it more 'aesthetic'.

The pistol is the traditional weapon of the Hollywood star. One schmuck with a .45 pistol (which never needs to be reloaded) runs into a building, takes out 50+ guys with kevlar and smgs/assault rifles. He never stops to pick up one of the clearly superior weapons that his enemies are carrying. No sir. He keeps the pistol. And oh yeah - if he shoots a barrle/car/helicopter/etc. it explodes because everyone knows that you can put HE rounds in your Glock. :|
I think you guys fail to realise that Jack Bauer is very rarely in a situation whereby he knows he will be shooting somebody. Take the past two seasons (and the current one too). Jack's been thrown into a terrorist crisis. He doesn't work for the government any more. He's just doing whatever he can to stop the terrorists/bad guys/the evil president. The weapon he aquires is usually from a bad guy. The last time he was working for the government, on his way to a location for a mission he KNEW would require firepower, he had a bulletproof vest and a shotgun. So the arguement is pointless. Currently, he uses whatever weapon is available to him. Just like in season 2 where he found the huge-ass sniper rifle, so he used it.
haha.. me and my gf were just talking about that last night.. how jack always storms a house / building with no helmet when all the other guys are wearing one...

Plus the fighting sequences are awesome (especially hand to hand.. reminds me of the first Bourne movie, kinda, in that it's not the classic hollywood-style fighting sequence).
