I always wondered why people wanted to build space stations on the moon so much. Yes, it would be pretty cool, but why not go underwater first and build underwater cities. It would get us ready for space cities and be much easier to maintain. I mean we have 75% of Earth that is just water, we should use it and build cities.

Because that would be simple? We have to make things overly complicated and spend billions of dollars on something we will benefit little out of.

setting up a self sustaining city underwater does not keep the species from going extinct like setting up a self sustaining city in space or on another planet would.

the ultimate payoff is huge.

we are one asteroid strike away from extinction so it's kind of a having all your eggs in one basket concept.

maybe because we walked out of the sea millions of years ago and don't want to go back.

Who'd want to live in an underwater city?

I know one thing. I hate everything about space. Spending Billions for what. People are getting killed by Cancer. But lets spend billions in Space.

I think it would be cool to live in that, but you can say the same for Mars or the Moon.

True, but like I said it could be practice then in another 100 years or so we could actually go into space. Hoping, that we won't get hit by an asteroid for a few million more years.

Atleast on the moon I could go outside and inside at will. what would I do in the middle of the ocean? Swim?

Very true, but maybe they will have some platforms at the top with....an elevator to get up there. lol

Exactly. We are humans. Not fish. we are meant to be on land and not have to take submarines to go everywhere.

It's also much easier to build a structure that can withstand zero pressure instead of one that can withstand the massive wieght of water.

There could be a tunnel system where automobiles could be used. Who knows what we were meant for though. I don't know if we were meant for space, water, Antartica, the atmosphere, or anything else. I am just thinking out loud about some ideas of underwater cities.

Yeah, I didn't totally think it through. :\ Underground cities would probably work out better, but I'm sure if we can build oil wells at sea then we could one day build underwater cities, but it would be much easier to MAINTAIN than space cities IMO.

So you want to spend your whole life in bubbles and tubes. Yeah that makes great sense.

75% might be water, but much of that water is so deep that humans can't take the pressure. There's also no use in building underwater without sunlight or anything. We even still have to discover sooooo many types of fish in the pitch black water, which is very deep.

It does make logical sense, but no I wouldn't want to spend my whole life there. Just like I wouldn't like to spend my whole life in the USA.

I'm just wondering why go to space when going underwater SEEMS easier. You know they do have those underwater habitats for astronauts to train in, so its already kin of being done.

It's more important to make sure people are having a happy life than keeping humanity from going extinct. I'd support an underwater city for sure. Maybe we could also populate it with scientists to operate completely free from the influence of politics and religion.

It actually doesn't make any sense. At all. Humans could neither survive the pressure nor the psychological effects of this.

To be fair, we wouldn't have to handle the pressure, the structure of the underwater city would have to handle it. And I imagine leaks would occur due to that pressure.
