because of gender roles, its the norm for males to be tough and "masculine"

I think Australian Football is more violent. They go out there beating the crap out of each other with no protection of any kind.

Its like a cross of American Football and Soccer.

Rugby is a rough game but not straight up violent.

And Canadians play hockey from a very early age so they are naturally more inclined to be good at it.

Are those fights in the middle of the hockey rink part of the game? Like this one.. The commentator talks as though it's part of the game lol.

I've noticed that the announcers tend to do that for most hockey fights. Makes sense considering that the fights are what people really want to see when they go to a hockey game :P

Anyway, at least in this particular case the fight made up more of the game than the actual sport.

No man could ever play ice hockey without proper gear. That would be instant injury. I am surprised they went as long as they did without helmets.

Yeah like Americans and Football. Imagine a Canadian league trying to compete with Americans in that sport.

Fights are more for standing up for your star players when they're getting harassed or targeted by your opponents. Also done to get some momentum/energy behind your team if your team is letting off the gas or has fallen behind. I'm not the biggest fans of the fights but they're part of the game and it's not often that folks get hurt aside from broken hands/messed up shoulders. As for the violence in the rest of the game, I chalk it up to the elbow and shoulderpads which are far too hard, causing too much damage when players lay out others. I'd hope the NHL addresses the equipment soon, as it's imperative for the health of their players. And yeah, we're good at hockey, it's our national sport :D

Wait, since when do rules make a sport better? Especially with how wonky(even if strict) football's rules are, and how widely maligned NBA's refs are(even moreso than NHL's).

well maybe stricter rules make a game more interesting but i think it's best if it's as simple as it can be

What else are we going to do? Sit in our igloos all day and do nothing? PS, we have 2 national sports. Lacrosse and Hockey. Lacrosse was the ONLY national sport until 94 I believe.

Ice hockey is nothing compared to rugby in terms of violence. Ice hockey is gay Yank football on ice with even more PPE. True violence is rugby or Aussie-rules football (soccer). True violence without all the lame padding.

It's not that rough. Lots of injuries only happen when a player is hit at a high speed without seeing the player coming. Also at the moment the Russians are the top dogs. Other than that it's always the elite 6: Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Czech Republic.

Hockey isn't that violent. If you're lucky you get to see one, maybe two fights a game on average. As for Canadians being good, most kids in Canada are put into a hockey/skating program by age 6. I myself played hockey from age 6-14, and now I play recreational hockey sometimes.

Trinners

 that teaches him for not watching ahead of him. That reminds me of the time my one friend was playing a game, and he was going for as many hits as possible on the same kid, over, and over. (he plays defense, the kid was a hell of a wing) and the one time he went to hit him again, the kid panicked, and held his stick in front of him, my friend then went through his stick and hit the player hard, and took him out of the game.

I think that was his 6th or 7th hit on him.

It's violent because without fighting, Hockey would have ratings lower then Infomercials.

Not true. Hockey had its highest ratings when Gretzky played. How many fights did he have? Hockey is violent because its a sport where the players police themselves. You go after our top dog, be prepared to answer the bell? You take a run at our goaltender? Be prepared to pay the price. etc, etc. Best sport on earth.
