but not cow

it seems the "cuter" the animal is the less people think it's ok to eat.

which is irrational.

Is it considered cruel? I thought it was just uncommon.

It's really not rational, but in a lot of countries dogs are seen as pets rather then food.

Its a social taboo, they don't need to make sense. The only reason we don't eat people is becuase its not socially exceptable.

It's like asking why don't people eat other people, except to a lesser extent. It's a cultural and sociological thing.

I'm sure those that eat dog view the Western diet – and parts of animal that we consume - as equally strange, and perhaps a faux pas in their own culture.

I remember when I went to panama, there was a guy selling the newspaper, and he said "EXTRA EXTRA! MAN RAISES CATS JUST TO EAT THEM!" I bought the newspaper and I started reading, it said that the guy took the small poor kitten in his hand, bit his head off, then ate his intestines and liver :s and they put a photo of the guy eating a cat!!!!

only the cows from harvest moon are cute... this reminds me when I visited a pork slaughter house, my uncle owned the place along with other guy, it was a small ranch, property of a family living there, my uncle payed to them to take care of the pigs , and from time to time my uncle visited the place to kill some pigs, he didnt killed them with a bullet...he killed them with a sledgehammer and slitting their throat :s I remember my uncle entering with the sledgehammer to the place where the pigs were, as soon as they saw him, they all ran away, jumped fences and all that, until he got one, knocked him out with the sledgehammer and killed them! QQ i was so scared... oh and I ate pork that night, but not the one from that ranch

I'm sure the notion of cruelty stems from the treatment and preparation of the dog, rather than the actual consumption. Countries that consume dogs and cats probably aren't best known for their humane treatment of animals.

Well, it is a dog eat dog world out there... I imagine that it isn't any more cruel than it would be to eat any other animal, but, based on where you happen to be in the world at the moment, what is and isn't acceptable to eat differs.

They're both cruel unless it's necessary for survival.

I dont think that many people see it as cruel, just the hippie tree-hugger animal lover type people. Basically, that old, single, dried up lady down the street who has 2 cats and 3 dogs named after her brothers and sisters.

I was born in Korea, a country known for eating dog. But it's not that common of a food there. In fact, younger generations are starting to see it as wrong as westerners do. I personally think it's wrong because dogs are pretty intelligent and we should treat them as pets and not food. Pigs are intelligent too, but as another poster before me said, they aren't really known for their loyalty.

not everything can be calculated by science, so things like this cannot be explained thoroughly.

It's not cruel, just impractical. Modern dogs were bred to assist in herding and hunting livestock and game, not to end up on the dinner plate. A large scale dog farm would be too costly to maintain

I don't find it more cruel than eating a chicken.
