I think it's so people think, "Oh he's going underground, then this music must be like the music I used to listen to, I'll buy that." Or the rapper is trying to get a part of the underground market, thinking if they say they don't have a record deal then they may jump on board and buy that cd.
Well they dig a hole and then they throw said rapper in it and that is why they say he "went underground". He is then left to the torment of being with other "underground artists" such as, maggots, and worms. Until the day comes of his repentance when he decides to give up his career and become a mainstream artist. Then and only then will he be allowed out and never the same he was before.
I lol when people say rappers are going underground. Tupac is long dead and he isn't even irrelevant yet. Rappers that were one hit wonders and aren't really all that great just fade away, that's not going underground.XilePrincess

In some cases yeah, but not always...Joe Budden's someone who was a one (maybe two) hit wonder but his later work that didn't get any mainstream recognition is universally regarded as his best.
