Lately, I've been getting back into my old hobby of reading......but at my school, its pretty 'uncool' to read. Sometimes Im chatting away to my friends, and I mention a book im reading at the minute, and then give me a look thats says,'you READ in your spare time?!' But why? Its better than rotting away infront of a TV screen or PC monitor......

Though I don't usually do it, I don't think reading is "uncool". If anything, it's a great way of learning.

"It's better then rotting away infront of a TV screen or PC monitor"? First you're complaining about them not accepting your particular act of wasting your time and then you start to complain about their choice of wasting their time. You're honestly no better than them. :)

Let me explain: our generation is lazy, and work is seen as negative. Hell, the closest thing I get to a good book is a great RPG.

Because it requires us to think for ourselves and not be lazy. It isnt physically stimulating, it appeals to our distinctly human capacity for sedintary abstract thought and activity for enjoyment and leisure's sake.

it would appear that reading "for fun" was something only done in the past. now theres a reason why books like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have been made into movies8)

I love reading! Many of my friends enjoy talking about a novel they are reading and give intellectual notes about the book. Starting my next book My Education by Burroughs. Very interesting read, I must say.

Keep in mind though that sometimes people react worse to the specific book or type of book you are reading than reading in general. Most people wold enjoy a well-written novel, even if it is fiction. I myself would and do occassionally. However, for example, I much prefer history books, specifically reading military history. For me, that means a lot of the primary sources: Xenophon, Herodotus, Caesar, Vegetius, Sun Tzu, Clausewitz and others. To most people these authors are exceedingly boring and at least a little difficult. Add to that the modern dissertations on historical military experience and you have what amounts to a very large waste of time for some people. To me, there is nothing more interesting or worth doing, because these events and themes are some of the most important and pervasive we can study. Plus theyre plain interesting and sometimes entertaining. For some of you who posted here that you like to read, slugging through thousands of pages of primary sources might not e your idea of a good read; the point is people have preferences in their reading choices. You might find that if you ask a little, people will open up to what they like to read and will shed their "reading is uncool" shell (SOMETIMES (like not often...))

Reading is only uncool if you are forced to "analyze" things that may or may not actually exist in the literature. I enjoy reading for the adventure and experience... not the finding and discussion of literary devices.

To those who think reading is worthless etc... All the great leaders of past and present have read and do read extensively. You think Lincoln, JFK, Plato, Ginghis Khan, Caesar, etc. etc. had no time to read/did not choose to read? Think again...

I read, sometimes.... I like to read SI, ESPN,  religious texts, etc... However, I only like to read if it interests me... Reading a science book, or a school assigned book, is when I hate reading.
