Honestly, if I went up to the border, and stepped into Canada, it would be perfectly ok for me to have a beer, but if I step back, it's a horrible thing that's against the law. How does geography change the effect of alcohol on you?

My guess is it's because a good amount of teenagers here in the US are...well, frigging idiots.

True but the states might emphasis on MIGHT have the most idiots. Especially with the immature:mature ratio I've seen.

I did an essay on this last year in my english class, I think I got a B on it...

I don't particularly remember what I said, but my professor said I had good arguments. It had to do with drunk driving thats all I remember

True, but it seems like a majority of them are here for some reason.

It stinks that even though they are 18, they cannot dring for another 3 years. The rule should be at least 18 if you serve in the military. It's sad that you can catch a bullet in a war at 18, but not allowed a beer.

It's stupid that's why. Put this this way. The tradition of solving problems in the country is attacking the outside of the problem instead of going deep into it....So some teens have been driving drunk, then someone goes "raise the drinking age so this doesn't happen again". Viola. When the better solution would be to look at the psychological explanations for why beer has been abused so much and find a way to convince them to not want to abuse beer. Simple as that. We always seem to look at the punishment for things which might convince someone from commiting it in the first place instead of findig a way for them to not want to do it to begin with....

Actually, I'm pretty sure they do it to make it harder for kids in High School to get liquor. The age for smoking is 18, so pretty much anyone with a senior friend can get cigeretts. Getting beer still isn't exactly impossible, but it's a little harder.

Yeah not to mention that I know alot of 18 year olds who would like to get some younger highschool girls drunk to do the naughty naughty if you catch my drift. I find that pathetic though.

They probably set their age at 19 so three extra years of beer drinkers in America would go to Canada, buy a lot of beer, ultimately tons of profit.

Dont know the exact reason for it but all I do know is that Im glad I live in Canada and that I dont have to wait till im 21 to be drinking/partying. But when I turn 21 Im definitely gonna go to the states atleast once to check out the clubs and the party scene over there haha.

It's because the federal government blackmailed all the states into changing it to 21 by threatening to withhold highway funds if they didn't, and the states couldn't afford to go without them.

The better question is, why are we able to join the military at age 17 (with parental concent) and kill for our country but still have to wait 4 years to drink?

You can legally kill for your country but can't loosen up with a beer while you're on leave... Its so stupid.

The legal drinking age is 18 over here in the UK. I don't know what I'd have done when I first started uni if it had been 21. Although I calmed down alot since then.

In england there is a huge binge drinking culture that can lead to alcoholism and also disorder in the streets etc especially on friday + saterday nights when majority of people hit the town. Since the legal age for drinking is 18 people think its acceptable to do it younger and younger. Thats the reason they want to take the limit up to 21 here. Maybe thats part of the answer to your question.

The problem with that is that it exists with more than just the current generation. My parents used to drink sometimes excessively, and it always has been that way for hundreds of years, since before any drinking laws existed. It is just now the media publicise it.

I think someone told me there's some exception to that if you're in the Army and off duty. I'm not really sure, I dont care and I turn 21 in about a year anyway.

its awesome over here in Holland. You can smoke ciggaretts, pot(legally) and drink alcohol at the age of 16. Only heavy liquor like more then 30% alcohol is 18+.

WTF are you talking about?

Not everyone starts drinking aged 14, and of course you need to produce ID, if the seller has any idea what they are doing. I'm 16 in 4 days and I have NEVER bought drink from a shop, so you are exaggerating, alot. Of course there is underage drinking, but that goes on in every country - there is always a way to get around the law.

LOL wut? I am "responsible" enough to kill people, but not have a drink? Not to mention the fact that i don't have the car and even if i did i wouldn't be dumb enough to drink and drive. Haha in Australia we are adults at 18. Drink all you want. You can drive at 16. IMO if you can't drink until your 21 it pushes your moron years back, so a 25 year old might still be a moron going to parties in the States, but in Australia, you are well and truly over it by then.

Perhaps that's why people say we are more mature, but I don't know...

You got a limit on the harder drinks too? Over here alcohol is alcohol. Legal sex is... 15 here I think and16 for girls. I don't know though, I've never known anyone to get in trouble because they had sex too young. Not that 12 year olds should even be thinking about it...
