Let me start off by saying I'm not trying to troll or anything, this is a serious question for me

I'll admit it's a decent trilogy of movies, but I don't get how people say it's the best sets of movies or why it got so many Academy Awards :P

Because it's well made, well directed, the story is excellent, the acting is great, and it has a ton of memorable lines... Need I go on?

there are other mob movies that i like way better or are more action-y or whatever but i think that at the time it came out the godfather was this non over the top realistic portrayal of the mob that people had never seen before.

i could be wrong on that but that has always been my take on why the godfather is so revered.

if i was picking a favorite it would be goodfellas or casino.

Sorry I meant that Godfather is based in a non-fiction world. where LOTR is based in a fantasy setting, middle-earth.

Ah... got it.

To whoever it was... Personally, I'd say go out and watch Scarface instead if you're just watching just for Al Pacino. The Godfather is kind of leisurely in comparison, and much easier to relate to.

The Godfather isn't a bad movie... just a bit more sedate. Also, I prefer the book.

Just skip the sequels... they're boring beyond belief.

they were initially recognized so warmly because they got big releases, theyre really well made, and there were some major actors involved to generate even more interest (im pretty sure most of the younger actors were just up-and-comers at the time, but vets like marlon brando and sterling haydon were stars). im pretty sure the novel it was based on at the time was popular too, so i guess that helped as well.

theyve been remembered so long after again because theyre really well made but also because they have a surprisingly broad appeal thanks to the family elements and because they were extremely influential in taking the romanticization of crime to a whole new level. also, most of those up-and-coming young actors from back then have big star power now like robert de niro, al pacino, diane keaton, and robert duvall.

honestly...i really like the first 2 godfather movies...the first one more than the 2nd...not a big fan of the 3rd movie...

that being said tho...im not much on the action type movies...i like the more well thought out and slower movies...it was interesting to see how al pacinos character grew up thru the movies and how the family changed with him...i know a few people who like other mob movies better just cause there is more action and such...but i think they are great and everyone should see them at some point

Because Godfather 1 and 2 are nearly flawless films. The acting and cast are some of the best in film history, the story is incredible, razor sharp direction, very well written script, good soundtrack. The two films are the official definition for how to make an outstanding film

Hey look, someone on the internet wondering why something works the way it does in an obvious fashion.

Great.

But yeah, they pretty much revolutionized films and the first two were probably flawless in casting, direction, etc. Its hard to pick a problem with the first two films.

Why should you watch The Godfather???

Some of the most memorable scenes from ANY movie are from The Godfather.

The first one anyways. I never got around to the 2nd and third.

It's a sign.. it means big toni baloney sleeps with da fishes.
