This made me lol"NOO SEX IS BAD WE MUST SHEILD OUR CHILDREN FROM IT BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE THE CAPABILITIES TO TEACH THEM WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG ABOUT SEX IN WHAT SORT OF WAYS, HOWEVER VIOLENCE SUCH AS CHAINSAWING SOMEONE IS OK"
carrot-cake
That's probably why.
cause sex in games makes the system all sticky....:?Omni-Slash
But, seriously, I guess I have no problem with sex in video games... although I can't imagine why people would want to see video game characters having sex... :?
There are many games out there that have very graphic violence. Mortal Kombat, God of War, Gears of war, just to name a few. And yet people don't seem to mind. But when a sex scene, no matter how graphic or light it is. (In the case with Mass Effect it's the latter) people, mostly parents, go in an uproar. So this is their logic according to my understanding: They are ok with something that is BAD for humanity. Yet they are angry at something that is ESSENTIAL for the human race to survive. >_> right.... Any idea why this is?scorptatious
Two reasons.
1) People still think of games as being for kids. And it's okay for kids to see violence, but not sex. Because they're more likely to actually imitate sex (or so the argument goes). Also there's the gender reinforcement roles thing. Boys still get water guns, and girls still get Barbie dolls. Water guns are okay for boys because fake guns reinforce dominance and protection roles. Dude mght honor the family by joining the Marines or something. But sex is out, because then the dude might grow up to be a pornographer.
2) People think of videogames as not being art. Sexual content is okay in movies, because movies are art. But videogames are just games. I don't agree with that, but in many ways the videogame industry isn't helping its image as an artistic medium.
Because we in the U.S. live in a socially conservative country. In Eurpoe, for example, female breasts are seen on TV commercials (not in England, mostly in Scandinavia). The U.S. is a gun-oriented, individualistic nation, so we are naturally more desensitized to violence. I too would like to see more embrasure of sexuality in the media, but it's not going to happen as long as you have Fundamentalist Chrisitians pushing their agenda.
Well the thing is, violence (homicide) is a serious crime punishable by law that most people wouldn't want to do anyway. But sex is something people, regardless of who they are, want to do. Especially teenagers it seems. So exposing them to sex will probably make them more likely to have sex. And I guess a couple of 14 year olds having sex = bad

I agree completely. Brilliant critique of our American culture. Of course, in Europe, the role of sex and violence is fairly inverted.
They're worried about sexual harassment maybe. And kids rough house anyway, they'll just learn a move or two in the process:lol:.
Sex in games gets you closer to adult entertainment and game developers don't want that rating because with the cost of games they'd not make the money back. Simple as that.
Violence, with the supposed "good guy" winning, no matter how graphic, seems to be OK, but graphic love making is taboo...it says much about the uptight insular nature of Western society.
spoofnutz
Yes. It's greatly due to America's individualistic culture and a winner-take-all system of social mores. The good guy can go to any lengths to do good for himself/his family, no matter how many human rights violations are committed or people get into his way (and it's always a dude...).
DOAX2 comes to mind when I think of this topic. It's rated M and it's a vollyball game. No violence, no swearing, no conflict of any kind, just ridiculous boob physics and overtly sexual, doll-like anime girls. I can't say I agree with it, but it certainly doesn't deserve an M rating.

I think we all know that the game in question is a self-described masturbation similator. A new rating isn't going to change that.

Yeah, those games fit into the "the industry isn't helping its image" category. Nobody's buying those games for the volleyball, they're buying it for the bouncy boobs and the girls in bikinis. Thing is, even GOOD story driven games too often treat women as mere sex objects. Final Fantasy X might have been story driven, but it sure as hell had Lulu's boobs about to pop out at any moment. For every kid who tries to tell his angry mom that Final Fantasy VII really does have a great and captivating story, all mom sees is the cutscene where Tifa's gigantic breasts are flopping about all over the place. Same thing with comics. Sure, plenty of comics had great stories. But when your mom sees your comic collection and sees Psylocke going into battle wearing a thong and her enourmous bosom mere millimeters from escaping her costume, all mom sees is a sexual fantasy for an over-sexualized young teenager. Then she throws your comics in the garbage and has dad give you "the talk" about why you don't have a girlfriend yet.
So yeah...in many ways, the videogame ISN'T helping to promote its image as art. Because too often, what gets promoted most of all in advertising is the gore and the scantily clad women. The Gears of War games had tasteful ads. But when mom walks by and sees you cutting people up with a goddamn chainsaw bayonet, all she's gonna see is trash. Sure, Tomb Raider might just be good old fashioned gaming fun. But when mom walks by and sees the cover of your Tomb Raider game, all she's gonna see is T&A.
So yeah...in that sense, the gaming industry sure ain't helping itself to get taken seriously. Do less marketing towards horny 13 year old kids who have never seen a bare breast, and do more marketing towards adults.
Well it comes down to how society works.
Now a days people who have sex get life in jail
While people who go on mass murdering sprees are just seen as a normal part of life.
Makes perfect sense imo. (Sarcasm)
This is more of an american thing. In the United States violence is glorified and sex is villified. In Europe they are way more lax on nudity, and take a stronger stance against videogame violence. Example in Germany boobies are widespread on television, but FPS with lots of gore get banned.
Our society is more fearful of having children exposed to sex then violence. But I think thats starting to change. Now our kids will just be completely sheltered from society.
Because boobies cause more childhood trauma than chainsawing someone in the face.
THE_DRUGGIE
Love the way you put that lol :P
Our society allows people to create what they want. Yes there will be ratings to let people know content but no one is stopping the developers except their own desire to make money. Which I can't blame them. Our society is more fearful of having children exposed to sex then violence. But I think thats starting to change. Now our kids will just be completely sheltered from society.
