It's not a problem with format; it was with New Line. They wanted the HD version (BD or HD) to have new content; more than the extended editions, but New Line had a falling out with Peter Jackson, stalling the project. Since they've made up, and Jackson is working on The Hobbit now, we might see LOTR on BluRay in the coming years... MAILER_DAEMON

id imagine that they want to justify buying the movie twice by adding more than audio and video quality.
I really don't understand the big deal about HD. DVDs don't look bad or dated in any sense, so I don't see the point in fully investing in a format that costs more and adds just a bit more clarity.bman784
it depends on what youre watching them on.

If you have an HD tv, the difference is huge. It's just another level of 'epic'. The difference is mostly noticable on TVs greater then 30 inches.

If you have a HD tv you will notice. HD tvs support 1080p while Crt's only support 480p so you can imagine what the picture would look like when you a 480p source on a 1080p set
Simple question here. Why hasnt the Lord of the Rings films been released on Blu Ray or HD DVD. WHY!!!!!!!! I really want to see the Return of the King in HD. And many other people do. So why not?OmegaWeapon9
New Line is probably waiting to see who wins the format war.
I know that's what I'm doing.
because there in a constant struggle for it right now over the fact that who ever secures that movie deal will get millions of umm...fans of the series to buy the movie to see it with a slight higher pixelation countlinkin_guy109
720 and 1080 are a BIT more than just a slight pixelation increase buddy. WAtch a regular dvd on an SD tv then watch an HD or Blu-ray movie on an HD tv. Also, HD-DVD and Blu-ray also unclude high def sound. :)
