Although i'm religious , i never supported or understood reason for genocide / muder in name of religion.

There is a vrey good article Religion ( genocide and crime against humanity ) on enotes.com. Religious people are not only the victims of mass killings, they also can be the perpetrators of violence. Although it would be much too simplistic to suggest that religion causes genocide and crimes against humanity, it nevertheless is true that religious people, prompted by religious motivations and employing religious symbols, have committed mass atrocities. A long tradition of this exists in Europe, with early examples being the Crusades, the destruction of Jewish communities and the Inquisition's bloody assaults on the Cathars of Montsegur and Montaillou.

OT?

Why there is genocide and murder in name of religion? Even tho it has considerably lessened , there are still news of atrocities going on in the world in name of religion.

How do you explain it?

Because it sends heathens to God faster so they can be judged for their wicked ways.

Kind of like abortion.

It is highly inaccurate to say "religion" is the source if this violence, since without the people to twist the beliefs and take advantage of the weak-willed and desperate, it wouldn't ever happen.

Abortion is cool but its use should be sporadic. Some of these girls seem to think I'm made of coat hangers.

The blood god demands more blood in his name, he is thristy. If we sacrifice all the heathens who oppose the blood god, we might quench his thirst.

People like to find justification for their evils. This is not the fault of religion but the fault of the one who does evil.

True. Also there has been genocide and murder in the name of secular ideologies such as Marxism/Communism and Nazism, as well as Nationalism.

The root of the problem seems to be the "the ends justify the means" mentality. I.e. It's okay to do bad things for a good cause. That is the problem.

Its usually not for religous purposes. Most of the time its political reasons, but people just use religion to justify it or to recruit braindead cannon fodder......or sword fodder.....

However, when it is for religious purposes, people feel that serving god's will is paramount to any sort of compassion or humanity......ironic isn't it?

Well technically speaking quite a bit of the most notorious mass murderers (Stalin,Mao, Pol Pot)where Communists, and Communism is an atheistic, anti-religious ideology.

Have you even read On Liberty? He delineates an entire social justice theory predicated on rule utilitarianism. And it includes concepts such as rights and dignity. Also, Kantian ethics is sh*t and utilitarianism is also altruistic.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant who was very rarely stable, Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could think you under the table, David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel, And Wittgenstein was a beery swine who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.

Theory is just that theory. We may not do evil so that good may come of it.

Moreover if we say that the ends justify the means, we do not even know that using an evil means will achieve the good end we want. The only thing guaranteed is the evil that we will do, not the good that may come about as a result of that evil.

Rights and dignity conduce to utility. Ergo, utilitarianism allows for those concepts. I just told you that utilitarian law isn't devoid of standards and totally flexible.

You do realize that followers of "Eastern religions" also commit religiously motivated violence. For instance in India, Hindu fanatics have committed much violence against Christians and Muslims (Marxist Naxalites have also committed a lot of ideologically motivated violence in that same country).

I'm reminded of the song "One Tin Soldier". "Go ahead and hate your neighbour, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, you can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgement day."
