I dont mean to push my pessimism on you dudes, but ive never voted and i dont think i ever will. When youre in a democracy, and your only other options are voting for more democracy, whats the point?

They pick people to represent different ideas for you to vote for, but its not like youre really voting for the person, your voting for what they promise, so why bother having money wasting elections?

You could just fill in the write in candidate part with Bugs Bunny or Hitler or something.

Jesus would be another good one.

Id be fine with that. They might as well pick a cartoon, or something that everyone likes and just say "Hey Invader Zim stands for lower taxes and better healthcare!" Whats the diff?

I think it makes a difference as to what figurehead youll have to deal with for a few years, but it doesnt change what people want, and thats whose voice should always be listened to regardless

As much as the system is flawed, it's the best there is. If everyone voted the politicians would sit up and listen. The fact that only about 40% of eligible voters actually vote, the politicians do as they please.....so lets stop complaining and vote.

I vote... but I realise my voting is pointless in the UK as really it is a 2 party race, and the party I voted for last time around was way behind it's front runner pals...

Voting gives you the right to whine and **bleep** and moan about the party in power and all that they're doing wrong. I wouldn't give that up, myself.

Though to be honest voting Conservative in my area means nothing other than my own peace of mind, since the votealways skews towards the sodding socialists that love throwing free money at people. Picture me and a few other people standing off to the side while a group of a hundred hemp-hat wearing hippies all dance around in a circle holding hands and you get the general idea of my regional distribution.

That sounds like me and my regional distribution... although I'm usually nude and chasing squirrels.

Its not like our votes mean anything anyway. So I go and vote for Fred Thompson at the polls. Great...but I'm in NY, and the day a republican wins NY will be the day that hell freezes over. And even if by some slim chance a republican does win NY, the electoral college can just go and decide, "**** all of their votes, we're not counting them at all...we decide who wins!"

the key word there is should....probably less than half of politicians actually do what they say they will.

It's not that I don't vote because I don't think it will make a difference; I don't vote because I don't care.

I meant government policy. If you vote in someone with the same opinions as you, it can become government policy if they become President.

Ah, ok ;)

But even while they may sharesimilar morals chances are very good that you disagree on some things too. With the added ire that comes from the population having to say they are led by such and such a person, instead of a set of ideals

And here I thought this post was going to be about the statistical improbability of a single vote actually making any difference in the outcome, which is something I've thought about many, many times.

No, i think thats less important. Except for the fact that 100% of the people are wasting thier time by doing so (In my nihilistic opinion of course)

Twice every four years isnt really that difficult to do. If you are fed up with the political process, then vote for a minor party.

My civics teacher was talking about this how "for every 1,000,000 people who vote its one vote for that person"

so i really dont see a reason to vote.

In a democratic system, the only people who are respected or have any power at all are those who can vote. That's why back after the Civil War whites made laws to stop blacks from voting. If you can't vote, you don't have any say or any power. If you don't like the candidates, just vote for an independent or something.

voting is the process that tells the people in power what people want the one with the highest votes say that their polites are what people want so if you don't vote you can't complain about what you think about the state of your goverment you didn't vote for what you wanted so nuts on the road.

I won't vote, even though i looked down on people who didn't before i was old enough. Bottom line is both sides are in the pockets of the corporations so it doesn't matter. America needs to be re-built from the ground up. Wrong, voting is whoever spends the most money and tells the biggest lies wins.

Last time I checked, there were over a dozen different parties, all but two of which exist for the sole purpose of diverting votes from candidates that might actually win their elections.
