My sister and her boyfriend hate widescreen...they say that the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen are too distracting... ( one of the dumbest things I've heard )

Too distracting? I could see if the bars were going through the movie and blocking things out of view but they're not...you actually see more with widescreen, don't you? They like their movies all stretched out and I hate that because some things are left out of view on fullscreen...

They are the only people I know who will not buy a movie they want if they can't find it in a full-screen edition...that's crazy to me...but I'm wondering if any one else is like them and prefers fullscreen to widescreen...

Personally, I prefer widescreen...

Go on over and slap them for me. If the director had WS in mind, yes you are seeing more in WS. Tell them to walk around with their hands raised blocking the edge of their left and right eyes. Thank the tech gods for HDTV. P.S. Ask them if there are two versions of a CD, one with all 10 songs and one with 6 songs for the same price, which would they buy?

Maaan, people who think Fullscreen is superior need to be slapped, put on a space ship, and shot to the moon.
Widescreen is the only way to go, and I get bummed out when some one buys a DVD in FS.
I also hate it when they do FS on TV, and they have to pan the screen around because they can't fit the important shots.

If they had a widescreen tv (or monitor) the black bars wouldn't be such a problem. But anyway, I definitely think ws is better.

I hate that!

I remember someone buyinga movie I wanted to see(I think it was '300') in fullscreen and I couldn't even enjoy the movie...it was too stretched out across the screen...

I perfer Widescreen. However if the movie slow-paced and doesn't feature ANY action, such as a drama or comedy, I can managesitting througha fullscreen version.

I won't buy a fullscreen dvd of something that was originally widescreen, (i.e. all movies). Technical question for anybody that knows the answer: do widescreen dvds have the same vertical resolution and a greater horizontal resolution than full screen, or do they have the same horizontal resolution and a lower vertical resolution?

Movies are generally presented in 1:85:1 or, especially for epic-type stuff, 2.38:1. Widescreen TVs have a ratio of 1.78:1, which is probably why you are still getting black bars.

I HATE watching a widescreen movie on a 4:3 TV, I try to avoid it at all costs. Now if were talking about which display I like better well I LOVE widescreen (especially amazing when gaming). PS. My TV and computer monitor are both widescreen.

I should think it has a larger resolution, otherwise the video quality would be worse, which isn't the case.

That's what I would hope, but I was just seeing if anyone knew that for a fact. I guess I'll go google it.

that depends. if im watching a movie on my widescreen tv, then i like widescreen. if its on a 4:3 tv, then fullscreen. i dont mind missing a little bit of the movie on fullscreen because its never anything major.

I usually always buy widescreen versions of everything, I can't stand fullscreen because of what gets cut off on the sides and the shots often feel cluttered and too close. If it's filmed a certain way, I'd rather see it that way rather than get compromised for it to fit my TV.

One thing I can't stand is that there are so many definitions of "widescreen". Aspect ratios vary so much on widescreen that sometimes even on widescreen TV's you'll see black bars.

I dont care if I am watching a movie on a 42" plasma screen or a 19" TV, I will ALWAYS choose Widescreen over fullscreen.
