nothing taking down windows in forseeable future(as in forever)
Microsoft is the only one capable to taking down MicrosoftrilpasSo Windows 8 will take down microsoft. I think that 8 will be what Vista did but 5x more. Something tells me they will find it a failure and will retract it with an updated 7.
Vista and ME were horrible resource managers. That's why they failed.
All accounts are that Windows 8 is better and faster than Windows 7 with service packs. It boots up and shuts down faster and it runs all programs equal to or better than Windows 7.
The problem with Windows 8 is that it's built with a mobile eco-sytem in mind [Desktop/Tablet(Surface)/Smartphone(Windows Phone)] (cough-Apple-cough) and as a result, it's more optimized for touch-interfaces than it is for the old mouse/keyboard interface.
It'll work with a K/M setup, but it will feel big and clunky with the tile UI. Everything launches from the tile screen in Windows 8, not the Desktop. (by default anyway)
Furthermore...Microsoft's advantage (and bane) is that XP and Windows 7 are so GOOD that nobody wants to leave them for MacOS, or Linux, or even Windows 8!
Most people/businesses are perfectly content using a decade-old OS because it works perfectly fine and developers are still making tons of money off the platform.
I doubt. No other OS has the wealth of programs that Windows does. As it is, there's no viable reason for the average user to switch to another OS. Linux is quite stable, but doesn't have enough support from the software industry. Not everyone has the patience to use non-GUI applications. Mac is great when it comes to just getting the job done, if you can find the right program to do it. Since OSX should be working on x86 architecture now, perhaps we'll see more of that, but until most game engines are written for OpenGL as opposed to DirectX, they'll miss out on the gaming industry.
Linux and OSX is slowly catching up to Windows, but until they have a better arguement than "we don't get viruses as much," they won't take down Windows.
Edit: Still though, it's not impossible. The average PC user is getting a little smarter. Firefox is taking over IE. That's enough evidence right there. IE comes pre-installed, yet firefox is STILL dominating. People are more open-minded now.
Pretty much.No and the reasons are one word, business. Businesses are not going to switch their entire infrastructure over to a new OS. Just won't happen.

IE ratings skyrocketed when they announced the new IE9. Which actually has quite a few commercials, meaning serious business.I doubt. No other OS has the wealth of programs that Windows does. Perhaps if more companies embrace the BYOD rule than maybe several years down the road we will see more macs (I'm convinced that Linux will never truly catch on with the average consumer) than pc's running windows. That being said I'm still in the, "I doubt it" camp.
