Or will it take longer for them to achieve that status. And when they do, what are the implications?

China's economy isn't doing as well as they'd like the world to believe. I don't think a country with such instability could really be a superpower any time soon.
Unofficial superpower status (a la US pre WW1) possible.
Widely recognized/undeniable, no. Not unless they pull a Stalin, build up(which is unlikely)
Really, allot of it depends on if that housing bubble exploades, and if it does how China handles it.
Hopefully tieing together of national economies cn help reduce massive military buildups in the future (along with large global wars)
Essentially, they already are. The only thing I do not think they can do at this point is global firepower projection in an offensive capacity - but give that a little time, and they can go toe-to-toe with the U.S. on everything.
How exactly is China unstable? Because the US owes them $1.4 Trillion that it will never be in any position to repay? I'm sure they're properly concerned about that, but it isn't gonna break them! Their economy is poised to swiftly be the number one economy in the world -- the PLA (People's Liberation Army) already has more people in reserve than all 4 branches of the US armed forces combined (ready and able to wipe those smug Capitalist / Imperialist grins clean off our faces and be home in time for dinner)... they more than have the means and the man-power to meet the accepted criteria for Superpower status...China's economy isn't doing as well as they'd like the world to believe. their 2 billion people is huge draw back but it's also nice advantage. over 800+ million work in factory's alone. For all those people say bring all jobs back to U.S Well U.S would need 200 million more people alone to even be able make enough product for their selfChina's economy isn't doing as well as they'd like the world to believe. The U.S. is miles ahead in technology. an economic superpower? perhaps but there are quite a few growing obstacles in the way for China.
a military superpower? is less likely then an economic one.
China indeed has the potential within it, by resources, economic activity (and growth potential) and population to far outstretch the US in military prowess. but at this point it is only potential, and will be far into the future a possiblity, if ever.
economically, quite a few things stand in its way. first you got a growing middle class, second you got the extreme harsh treatment of manual labor, and third you got the environment.
the middle class is going to want middle class higher paying jobs.
the manual labor bit should go without saying, with anyone with just a cursory knowledge of the situation.
the environment is getting trashed, just there is no way around it is getting obliterated.
you also got the pro-democracy people, who i once thought is a force to be reckoned with, but after making several Chinese friends in the last two years has forced me to re-evaluate my original thoughts. I think it's possible they can be a future nuisance to the status quo, couple that with the growing middle class and the manual labor treatment. But everything i've ever heard from Chinese friends (who came from all over the place, Harbin, Beijing, Hong Kong, Dalian, to those living outside in the UK, US, and Malaysia) that Chinese people are by and large ok or happy with the Communist Party, and don't feel the need to rock the boat.
but yeah, as an economic power, it's possible.

i live in the u.s and as much as i wish U.S could outmatch by tenfolds it just wouldn't. Yes u.s has little more advance tech over most things, but china is not far along. China held the record for most fastest super computer for good portian 2010-2011 then u.s took that record back.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/10/china-supercomputer/
Then last year where all that N.K crap was going on and u.s sent their AirCraft carriers near the sea where china is. China had submarines on their ass that could not be detected.

I won't say nothign about their fighter jets lol with their top gun video lol.
If u.s put trade embargo on china. i wouldn't be shocked it took at least 1 1/2 years to even attempt to get the start production going. china as over 800+ million workers alone in factories. The U.S would need atleast 200 million to produce the amount of goods china does for U.S
I don't think there will be another dominating superpower like US decades ago or the what the british empire once was.
China will be one of the strongest economic forces, but it's going to be the entire human race working together to make real progresses.
China will not lead the world into the next modern world revolution or anything similar, we're living in a different age.
the PLA (People's Liberation Army) already has more people in reserve than all 4 branches of the US armed forces combined 67gt500
All able-bodied men and women in China are considered reservists. Doesn't mean they have enough boots for all of them, though.
They already are a superpower. Everybody in the world ow them money, they have a huge military soon on par tech wise with the US, they have nukes and a space program that is expanding and getting more and more investments. Russia fell a long time ago and the US is following their footsteps.trasherheadwhen did Russia go downhill? Russia is more privet then u.s letting everyone know about their stuff.
They are, thankfully the US is a capitialism state, so we will buy from the cheapest bidder and china is the cheapest bdider
They are already, aren't they? Don't they have the largest army in terms of man power and a strong economy to match.

Maybe on their own turf....Their power projection capability is a joke though.

If large armies are as important as people here say then North Korea is one of the world's most powerful nations...

The Kitty Hawk's battle group's two submarines probably hadn't deployed their towed arrays, meaning it was unlikely they would've detected anything coming up behind them. They were also probably 688s, which don't have nearly the detection and stealth capability of the Seawolfs and Virginias that we'd actually send against the Chinese navy in an actual war. Those Chinese subs are also tiny, diesel-electrics. They don't have the range, depth, or speed to be any match against any USN sub. The Chinese do have nuclear attack subs, but they aren't nearly as quiet as the conventionally powered ones that snuck up on the Kitty Hawk.
