Via nanotechnology, cloning organs, uploading your mind to a computer/internet/whatever,etc. Is there any chance of these methods of attaining immortality being widely available soon, perhaps within the next 50 years or so?

I dont know, but it's a possibility that science could discover a way to stop aging. Certain cell lines dont die off or age while others do. There may be ways of correcting for that, but should we?

I don't really want to achieve immortality until we've solved the issue of dwindling resources.

No, but I was watching this science show that said we have discovered a gene that effects aging and if it's removed or altered in some way it could increase the length of your life exponentially.

I don't know, but I think that would complicate reproduction. If we live forever how do we calculate when and where we need to introduce new life into the world?

I think they already know how to do that, the problem is because there is no cell die off tumors are created because of it. Stop the tumors then we might have the fountan of youth.

Well if we're immortal then reproduction isn't really necessary anymore.

We might not die of age or natural causes, but there's still non natural causes that I don't think human kind could escape. Murder, accidents, war, etc.

I say no, we shouldn't, unless there's a sure fire way to stop it.

Though I'm sure if that comes around, and starts being sold, governments will more than likely tax it, demand the scientists to make the effects temporary, so the people have to keep coming back to buy more, and maybe throw in some addictive chemicals into the formula as well, just for the fun of it lol.

I don't think they would be immune to being killed, we would probably only be able to remove death by aging.

Don't religious people take the use of stem cells as serious as cancer? I haven't heard much about stem cells in a few years, but the last I heard, using them is "immoral," or something along those lines (never really learned about stem cells. Only know that they can do wonders lol)?

I don't know much about the sciences with stem cells and all that other good stuff, but I read an article on why salamanders grow their limbs back and it is because of stem cells. In which currently scientist are trying to figure how they can use stem cells for recreating arms and legs for humans as well as organs. Stem cells are basically the instruction manual on how to put you together, it is what creates you while you are in the womb. I would think that this would put a stop to the tumors.

Immortality as in impervious to damage? No

But extremely long life is definitely a possibility. The probelm with out cell reproduction is we lose a portion of our DNA. If we can manage to reproduce cells while keeping our DNA intact, we can essentially live forever.

Yeah, I don't know what their argument against it is but I know for sure it's retarded. It could cure SO MUCH.

Personally, I do not think biological immortality is possible (to the extent that we desire it to be). The future of human evolution is cybernetics and the digitization of the consciousness (distant future). Nature has always been imperfect, and the only way to achieve perfection, is to create it.

I agree. It is also a function of society's investments. Until we stop funding war and other negative aspects of our civilizations, we cannot devote the resources to extending human life.

No immortality is just a dream but human immortality will probably never be achievable, just like intergalactic travel, time travel and Valhalla are just not possible.

That's because the difference between being alive and being dead is a functioning brain. We are our brain. What is the very essence of us, what makes me me and you you, is just activity in our brain.

Is there life after death?

Yes, but what if the brain could be preserved... perhaps digitally. People used to say it was impossible to do a lot of things we do today.

The brain is too complex to be digitally preserved. At least you have no evidence that this can be done.

Pfff... 20 years ago the idea of a MP3 player storing thousands of songs in a device the size of a postage stamp was laughed at as well. Portable storage at that point was a luxury for computer users. Now you can buy a 2TB portable HDD for $130. It isn't a matter of "if", just a matter of "when".

Immortality is terrible for the planet tbh, there will not be enough resources for all of us, and this would force brutal one-child policies such as China's, and that could lead to more horrors such as forced abortions(also happening in China). Science could find a way to slow down aging I'm sure, but stop it? I doubt it.

True immortality, no. Something eventually got to give.

Healthy life extending into the 200+ range, yes actually.

The problem is our physical bodies do not last long, and even with transplants and prosthetics we cannot expect to live forever because everything wears out eventually. And even if we find a way to stop the aging process completely, something else could still kill you such a natural disaster or some other traumatic event. Also global warming, new diseases and no new cures, war, there's lots that could keep us from moving forward.

Physically i don't think it is possible. But there are lots of historic figures from the ancient past who still are thought about and remembered every day. I see that as a form of immortality.

Yes, you may be right but that when is really far away. We don't even understand consciousness: there is still so much to learn about the brain that we don't know. Furthermore, there's the problem with how computers work and how the brain works. They are incredibly different in terms of structure. There is a reason many people believe that the brain is the most complex thing we know about in the universe, and it will retain that spot for years to come.

I dunno about immortality, but maybe living to a healthy 150 years could be possible soon. That and even 120 years would feel like immortality.

There might even be someone already who has lived to 120. In fact there is...

Jeanne Calment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_Calment) lived to be 122 years old. So, there is already someone who proved super long lifespans exist without manipulating cells and whatnot.

Habib Miyan lived much longer than 122 years. This man claimed to be 152 years old when he died.

The human brain's storage capacity is estimated between 10^13 and 10^15 bits, which would put it at around that number. :P Quantum computing will speed the process up substantially.

There will be a point in human existence when our biological forms will become the minority part of the complete system. At that point, life spans will become long to the point of seeming immortal. I don't think humanity is ready for immortality. The majority of humans still fear death and rely on superstitions to guide their lives. Ascension will only become possible when the sacredness of the biological human form is dismissed.

Prolonging mortality? Definitely

Attaining immortality? Never

There will be a point in human existence when our biological forms will become the minority part of the complete system. At that point, life spans will become long to the point of seeming immortal. I don't think humanity is ready for immortality. The majority of humans still fear death and rely on superstitions to guide their lives. Ascension will only become possible when the sacredness of the biological human form is dismissed.Zeviander

I don't think immortality is possible. You can certainly extend your life by taking care of your body and avoiding natural dangers, but no one can live for eternity.
Also I don't think that having immortal people on earth is such a good idea because the earth would become WAYYYY too populated and i mean way beyond its carrying capacity!

And even if it somehow becomes possible would you really want to "live" inside a digital computer? Immortality would completely defy what it means to be human as well as overcrowding our planet and placing a strain on our resources which may be too large to sustain?
