World-renowned scientist Ray Kurzweil believes that it won't be long before we can reverse aging. Kurzweil has also predicted that we will soon be able to replace any failing organ in the body with an artificial equivalent, that we will be able to scuba dive underwater for hours at a time and that it will be possible to write entire books within minutes. The basis for these predictions, in addition to his own experiences, is the exponential rate at which technology is currently advancing. "I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies' stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, aging," he said. "Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever. Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively." linky

Quite possibly. But lots of people think our natural lifespan on this floating rock is too long as it is.

No. I honestly doubt it's achievable in the first place, but if it is, I think it's going to take significantly longer than that.

Call me skeptical. We were already supposed to have cured all disease with gene therapy at this point. Didnt happen. Besides, death is a tool used by mother nature - how would humanity cope with the superexoponential growth of the population if no one died?

No immortality will probably never be possible. That's because you are your body and when your body dies then that's it, there is nothing anymore for you.

I believe "immortality" to be something of a misnomer in this case as you will only protract your life, dying will still be a real possibility. But given the way tech has been advancing, life/death is going to be more of a grey area than it already is.

Like here, there, and yonder, get us our flying cars and baby space travel, and maybe THEN we can talk about immortality.

Tree's are living organisms live quite a bit longer than 150 years, and there are worms that are ~immortal.

It'll never be possible.

Lets be real. If immortality comes only a select few are going to have it. By select few i mean the small group of people that secretly run things. A smart person wouldnt let any joe schmoe get immortal. What if some new age hitler rises and hes immortal? Immortality is bad

I don't know about full biological immortality, but I am confident transhuman augmentation and extended lifespans will become common within the next few decades.

Who knows, maybe those extended lifespans and sturdier bodies will let us last long enough to see real immortality be achieved...

Immortality in a world that in decades will be feeling the costs of over-population is simply moronic.

I will say that in a sense humanity as with all things is immortal. The molecules that make up your body will always exist.

Never. Even if immortality is possible in such a way there is no denying fact that everyday we move closer to death in the fact that our sun will one day burn out and become a black hole and take us all with it. We may be able to live forever by not dying of old age but otherwise we will die eventually.
