Windows 7 cracked the 20% share mark last month, a milestone the problem-plagued Vista never reached, a Web measurement vendor said over the weekend.

Statistics provided by Net Applications on Saturday put Windows 7's online usage share at 20.9% in December, up 1.2 percentage points from the month before.

Windows Vista, meanwhile, fell by half a point to 12.1%, its lowest share since July 2008. Vista peaked at 18.8% in October 2009, the same month that Microsoft launched Windows 7.Computerworld

The above is only an excerpt. You can read the full article here.

Many here deem Windows 7 to be the first great Windows operating system in ages. That is understandable when considering the launch of Windows Vista and Windows XP's age. Who here has made the switch and who here won't? Do feel free to explain yourself!

7 is alright... but it's still very glitchy for me. Windows Media Player is broken, the preview pane won't stay at a fixed size and Java updates now and then only to tell me I have the latest version and I just wasted my time.

I have 1 computer that runs vista and im pretty sure all the other computers are on XP

I have windows 7. I like it. I never went down the Vista route, however. My previous OS was XP which was also fairly stable.

I'm primarily a Mac user, so I don't understand usually when people say Vista sucks or whatever. What makes Vista so bad? I have Windows 7 on my Laptop, and it's pretty good, not much to complain about.

The same for me really, except with Jolicloud. I had Windows Vista so upgrading to Windows 7 improved a few things and Jolicloud improves upon those. All I really miss are those few odd PC games I play but I can just boot up WIndows 7 if I need to.

Windows Vista had many bugs that were not fixed for over a year. It also took a large amount of system memory to run so much that other things had nothing to work with because it was so badly optimized. and a lot of times if your computer was not built specifically with Vista in mind, it ran very poorly. It also had very little driver support for hardware. Overall it was a flop.

The best thing about OS X, I found... is that when something isn't working...it's a problem for almost everyone. I feel like all my Windows problems are isolated cases so Microsoft don't give a ****.

yeah. For me, Ubuntu/Linux just runs smoother and it has compiz running (not that Desktop Cube nonsense, productive stuff like Scale) which is just a norm for me now. I can run a bunch of crap in Ubuntu and it doesnt slow down, I cant say the same for Windows 7 on my laptop, just cant.

I use Windows 7 to play those few old games I have and Jolicloud for everything else. It runs faster and smoother and if I am just going to surf, why bother booting up Windows 7? That's my logic.

I haven't figured out how to run Compiz on Jolicloud yet but at the same time I don't really care either since the user interface is different to Ubuntu and Mint. I am on a laptop too.

Yep, when I go just to surf the web or watch videos or movies I just open up joli and take off. However when I'm in one of my game out session I usually fall to Windows.

entropyecho

Compiz brings nice little features to your linux desktop that can allow you to be more productive or just add a little bit of eye candy. Thats the best I can explain it :? Stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWaOjUQKO_g You can make your current viewing window transparent when you hover your mouse over to another thats under it to see its contents, invert any window, magnify, Scale (AKA EXPOSE in MAC OS), show desktop, w/e. Try it out.

I tried Chrome OS yesterday on my mother's netbook, didnt like it. Ill do a jolicloud when I get home. I do however overall like Ubuntu Netbook edition though, just having trouble getting use to the new interface from the previous one. They are also bring the same crazy interface to the desktop version with 11.04. Gnome is also changing :?

I think Microsoft have said they will support XP for a few more years so theres no real reason to not use XP for the time being. XP worked better than any Microsoft OS and with SP3 it is lightweight and very fast.

But dear lord, is the task manager bad. The one thing I miss from XP is being able to f***ing end my processes instead of asking them nicely to stop.

I know. That's what I've always done, and Win7 just doesn't kill hanging processes nearly as consistently as XP did.

Same. I still think that XP is the best Windows OS yet. I will admit in 2001 or whenever it came out... it was a little broken, but even by SP1, everything was totally fixed. But with XP, everything was pretty simple, was not a resource hog, and really didn't lay on all the special effects that vista tried or even that Windows 7 still has. I have no use for Widgets, Digital Bitlockers, and the new UI on the Windows Media player is terrible. I do like the way they overhauled how the windows explorer works/navigates.

Windows 7 is very similar to Vista, in design. Windows 7 is Vista, without the bugs and resource hogging.

I use to have my harddrive setup where I could boot into Windows Xp, Vista and 7 all at the same time, I benchmarked a few games on each, Vista won none, XP and 7 were hand in hand, which I found impressive. Because obviously Windows 7 uses more resources then XP.

Windows.. I have Windows 7 but I haven't been on it in a while, I've partitioned my HDD with Ubuntu 10.10. I'm too lazy to go into Windows and optimize it, though I'm sure once I do it'll be to my liking - Even so, I'm liking Ubuntu a lot more.

Uh disagree. Vista was crap.. As a pc gamer it was obnoxious as hell to use.. It was a resource hog, where XP outperformed it 99% of the time.. DX10 was a major let down, we were led to believe to see a immense performance INCREASE.. We never saw such a thing.. It also was at times instable, and drivers were hard to find.. Especially for 64bit.. Many older programs and games were either unstable play on vista with, or completely impossible.. The UI also was annoying with changes that made navigating more difficult rather then easier.
