Hey all,

I just got an extremely disturbing phone call, and I'm kind of concerned about it.

So about five minutes ago, I got a call on my cell, and I picked it up. I said hello, and the person said "We're going to get you, f*****." Then they hung up.

I'm freaking out about this, because I am gay I don't know if it is someone from school playing a cruel joke on me (I'm 14). Or if someone really is going to try to hurt me. The number was blocked, so I can't even trace it. And I don't want to go to the police, because most of the police in my town (very small town) are homophobic, and it would probably cause me more harm then good. I can't go to my parents, because I'm not out to them. So I don't know what to do here. Should I try to skip school tomorrow, or what?

Please help me here.

Thanks,

Don

Go Jason Bourne on them when they get to you and then flee the country to a place like Scandinavia with a different name. They won't bother you anymore, trust me.

From the sound of it you're not much in the way of choices but to go to the police. You're essentially being threatened and as far as i'm concerned thats not lawfully allowed. But should you insist on not talking to parents or police, at the very minimum you can at least stick with a group of friends, IF they make good on thier threats. Isolation should be the last thing for you in this case.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it is someone outside of your school, I would worry, but since it probabally isn't:

People are cruel, but they usually will back down if you confront them. I am not reccomending getting in a fight, but don't make it look like you are afraid.

Take my advice or not, it is up to you, if it wasn't very clear, my apologies.

I would say that is not constructive to this topic. Bad idea, don't run.

Again, don't be afraid, I know it might be hard given the situation but you have to. Hang out with your friends, like doanm said.

Well, first of all if they do make good on there threats, you'll want to be with a group of friends as much as possible. Second, while i'm not saying you shoulden't get freaked out, DO NOT SHOW IT. your body language will act accordingly and make you seem more vunerable. your liable to scare off most attackers just by walking like your tough **** and know how to handle yourself, but don't be cocky about it...just don't look afraid third of all, see if you can find one of these... look in a martial arts store or two in a nearby city, its always good to be prepared and it dosen't take much training to use it effectivly

Man I feel really bad for you... Living in a town like that and not having a single person to help you out on that problem... I think you really should open up to your parents or else you could have a very rough high school life.

You cant walk around with a baseball bat lol, the town probably doesnt even have a baseball team. Good concealable, non lethal weapons are electrified knuckles(blast knuckles) asps, pepper spray, brass knuckles, nunchucks, take your pick, use wisely.

Sorry for you man, just try not to show your fear and try to stick with a group of friends. Try to keep a non-lethal weapon with you if you can. I would try telling your parents, but that your choice if you don't want to.

Meh, if they're so tough they wouldn't have hung up on you straight away after shouting at you. This is literally just talk. I've had face-to-face threats worse than that that didn't develop. Just keep calm and if it happens more than twice go to the police with it. They don't need to know your sexuality so they'll assume you're just being threatened full stop.

The hell you can. Baseball bats are a great weapon of defense. Just attach it to a strap and wear it on your back.

i have to agree with hungry lol, wearing a baseball bat attached to your back will bring alot of unwanted attention to yourself, and they'll know your scared. But nunchucks? whip some nunchucks out on someone and unless your trained to use them you're gonna get laughed at and look retarted.

I would look out for any homophobes you know of, but it was probably just someone in your town trying to freak you out, or it might have been a mobster with the wrong number, but anyways its probably not anything to worry about, but just to be safe i would carry a small club shaped blunt object around with me if i were you, and don't worry, try to forget about the phone call. FYI not a homophobe, not gay.

If you go to the police or your parents you don't really have to come out about your homosexuality. Keep in mind that several people (especially in your region) use the term f***** fairly loosely, and they probably don't even know you're a homosexual.

I think I'll talk to my guidance counselor, and I'll keep a record of this. I won't go to the police this time, but if it happens again I will and I'll leave the "fa**ot" part out. And I'll also heed the advice to not go out alone. Hopefully this was just a cruel joke.

They called?

Don't take that too seriously.

If it were sudden violence they might try to hold their identity, but the whole point of trying to threaten someone is to have them fear you.

If they didn't want you to know who they were, they more than likely don't have an actual intent to harm.

Tomorrow someone might even tell you it was a joke from so and so.

In case that doesn't happen and there are following signs you might be in danger, don't hesitate to call your local police department, or at least tell your parents.

Now that I think about it, have you told your parents about this incident?

First of all, I recommend signing up for some martial arts lessons, particularly jiu-jitsu and aikido, but since it sounds like you live in a pretty culturally retarded town, you may have to take what you can get. Knowing a martial art or two will raise your confidence, and that alone will make you a less attractive target to bullies and potential attackers. Secondly, let me remind you of a story about a little place called Columbine High School. Two teenage gunmen shot and killed several peers based on their profession that they believed in a god. If they had simply lied about their true beliefs, many of them might still be alive today. The moral of the story is this: The key to victory in combat is simply not losing. A bully will invent their own reasons to fight someone, so the only thing you can do is give them a reason as to why it shouldn't be you. It sucks to have to hide who you truly are, but that's what most people do 99% of the time anyway, and it's a hell of a lot better than getting hurt or killed over it. I hate to say it, but living in the kind of place it sounds like you live in, you really shouldn't let anyone know that you're gay. I used to get picked on all the time in middle school, but I never got into an actual fight because I never gave anyone a reason to actually go through with it. I would actually talk to the people who were trying to bully me. I would tell them that if they really wanted to kick my a**, then they'd already won and it wouldn't really be that remarkable since I had no intention of fighting. Then I'd ask them why they thought they should fight me. After realizing that they didn't really have a reason to fight me, and that they weren't going to get the satisfaction they thought they would, they'd usually just give up and leave me alone. Again, the moral of the story is not to make yourself an attractive target. For the record, the police don't care about threatening phone calls, since it happens all the time and usually isn't serious, which is exactly what they'll tell you. Just stick around people for a while and try to make as many allies as you can. Most people aren't dumb enough to start a fight with somebody who's friends with everyone else. And again, I know this sounds terrible, but if there's any way you can cover up your homosexuality, then you should probably get to it. Best wishes, man.

1. Why come out to mean people at school before your parents? 2. Call the police anyways. If they don't do anything and you do get beat severely, then you'll have a lawsuit and live on easy street for the rest of your life. 3. If this is all made up, get a new hobby.

Do you live near a large city within your county? Consider the option of contacting the highway patrol, county police (if you have a large metro area in your county), and state police if the option of contacting the local police really isn't an option (if and when assault and/or battery continues, or if there is continual harrasment; the cops will not do anything for a single phone call).

Well, the people who love you the most, and will be there for you almost no matter what, and will try to understand you are your parents. That would really be the best place to start for help. I can't imagine being in your shoes, but thats the best place to go for help at 14.

warbmxjohn

This often isn't the case for Homosexuals in small rural areas. Remember, there aren't many baby-boomers in the boons of South Dakota that were dancing naked and tripping on acid in San Francisco around 1970, though only the TC knows his parents. If you know they're not homophobic and/or heterosexist, your best option is always to come out to them and discuss the situation.

I used to tell people that I would rape them with a straight face when they called me a f*****. Though I'm 200 pounds...so...yeah. It worked though. Likewise, I live in a metro area...and men are always a bit more weary of expressing their homophobia in large cities (for a number of obvious and not so obvious reasons), so I don't know if threats of sexual assault will work for you.

Speaking to your guidance counselor is a good idea, actually. So whoever mentioned that, kudos to you. Remember, if the harrasment continues, it is illegal, and law enforcement can obtain the information they need from the telecom company.
