I think its possible to survive without a college degree, if you have very good job experience and a high school diploma. What are everyone else's thoughts on this matter?

Depends on what type of job you are looking for and where you are located. If you have the ability to go to college no problem then I suggest you do that.

Going to college is very important if you want a chance at a good professional job. I think it's worth it, especially these days. Yeah, you can get lucky and get a good job without having a college degree, but on average people with college degrees make more money and have better jobs. Also, college is a great experience that can't be found anywhere else in life.

If "survive" is an accurate way of describing your career goals, than no - don't bother with college.

in today's 10% unemployment market, with 1 job for ever 6 unemployed, i'd say go to college. if you're not sure about what you want to major in or do after college then i would suggest going to a community college just to get your feet wet on some intro classes. most of these can be transfered to a 4 year college after you've found what you want to do without having to pay for that experimentation time.

wrong. there are plenty of good jobs out there. heck in college you can go to the career placement center(most colleges have one) to find out what they are and how to get them.

Get a degree if you want a reasonable job. I don't know about the USA but our government in Australia wants 40% of people ages between 20 and 25 (I think) by 2020 to have a university degree

Unless you have a skill that can take you somewhere in life, like your a very athletic and can because a pro athlete, then your gonna need a degree. Hard for the uneducated to get a good job where they can make more then 35k annual salary.

Someone like me can join the military or can work at a lot of different jobs, and make more money while the person in college is spending money on classes and books.

Its not just about getting a job. Going to college is a brilliant experience, you will remember it for the rest of your life. Look for a college that will give you oportunities for work experience and will spend time to help you find a job upon graduation.

thats only because everyone and their brother has a BS degree.

today its more all-or-nothing, at least with many degrees (science, business, etc). You either need your masters or doctorate, or dont bother

at least if you start working without a degree, you can start at the bottom and work your way up. Everyone should have to experience that, and not enough people (specifically college graduates) do. Its insane how many people I know have never had a job before until their college internship.

While their in school you could be making money but in like 3 years time they would of made all their money they spent on educated back plus all the money you made doing whatever. Education is money my man. Personally i hate school (im in uni) and would much rather follow a career as a pro athlete but chances of actually making it big and making good money elsewhere are slim.

It doesn't matter what you graduate with, you just need a degree. That degree shows your potential employers that you're able to stick with something long enough to complete it and that you are able to learn. High school doesn't teach you how to learn; chimps can pass high school.

not to mention being able to make friends of the same education level as yourself ( a college education) , find a smart significant other, and just be proud of the fact that you gained intellegence and knowlege / a skill that you can now put to work and gain 100k+ within a few years.

Having a degree on average usually means you have a higher paying job and have job security compared to some one who does not.. Furthermore college is education of your choice, meaning you can learn many interesting things that may turn you on to a field that you never knew you liked or even existed.

Don't you want to me as successful as possible in your life? With the added bonus of knowing you graduated college and are very knowledgeable in a subject? It's better than working on cars for the rest of your life, working paycheck to paycheck and gaining no one's respect. But it seems like you already have your mind made up. You want to take the easy way out, and want other people to help you justify your opinion so that you would feel more confident in your decision. But don't worry bro. the world needs plenty of garbage men.

Go to college. If you want a decent paying job, you don't have to go. But if you want a great paying job, then go and pursue a career. You aren't going to get much of anything with just H.S Diploma or GED.....

Well if you're goals are only to survive then no you don't need college, but you better hope you never get really sick, get into an accident, cause an accident, have kids, get fired, quit from your job etc.

Well sometimes depending on what field you're looking into getting into your school sends out your information to prospective employers (if you sign the right papers to let them)....and c'mon...wright job?

It's not just the piece of paper. It's the people and places and most of all the experiences. Since i'm in college, i can intern for Blizzard, or go to New Zealand to go skydiving and protect baby turtles. If you don't go to college you miss out big time.

$20K/yr when you don't need a degree to do your dream job.

[QUOTE="Engrish_Major"] So you think that you need a lot of money to survive?

survive, no. retire, yes. you want to work until you're 70, go for it.

But you're going to be at an obvious disadvantage in today's competitive job market - people with college educations are filling jobs that were previously open to those without a degree. And plus, $20,000 isn't all that much, even if it's your "dream job."
