I think its possible to survive without a college degree, if you have very good job experience and a high school diploma. What are everyone else's thoughts on this matter?

If "survive" is an accurate way of describing your career goals, than no - don't bother with college.
Go to college, that paper is important. the us economy is such that graduates cannot find jobs, how do you expect to get one without the paper.mattykovaxEven if you get the college degree how will you find the wright job? The only good jobs out there at the moment are IT jobs.
im only 14 so i cant tell you for sure, but both my parents went and graduated college, both did VERY well, and we are living a pretty frikken nice life. money isnt too tight and our house is in the suburbs and we just got it good. go to college and im sure you would get a nice reward too.

Someone like me can join the military or can work at a lot of different jobs, and make more money while the person in college is spending money on classes and books.im only 14 so i cant tell you for sure, but both my parents went and graduated college, both did VERY well, and we are living a pretty frikken nice life. money isnt too tight and our house is in the suburbs and we just got it good. go to college and im sure you would get a nice reward too.

Its not just about getting a job. Going to college is a brilliant experience, you will remember it for the rest of your life. Look for a college that will give you oportunities for work experience and will spend time to help you find a job upon graduation.

thats only because everyone and their brother has a BS degree.
today its more all-or-nothing, at least with many degrees (science, business, etc). You either need your masters or doctorate, or dont bother
at least if you start working without a degree, you can start at the bottom and work your way up. Everyone should have to experience that, and not enough people (specifically college graduates) do. Its insane how many people I know have never had a job before until their college internship.

do you want to make 30-40,000 per year and hope to get lucky and maybe make better or do you want to make 50,000-100,000? go to school, it worth it. that paper will get you a lot further then you can without it.I think its possible to survive without a college degree, if you have very good job experience and a high school diploma. I am not disagreeing with you, does not change the amount of inept people in higher up jobs simply because they have the paper.[QUOTE="newb16"]do you want to make 30-40,000 per year and hope to get lucky and maybe make better or do you want to make 50,000-100,000? go to school, it worth it. that paper will get you a lot further then you can without it. not to mention being able to make friends of the same education level as yourself ( a college education) , find a smart significant other, and just be proud of the fact that you gained intellegence and knowlege / a skill that you can now put to work and gain 100k+ within a few years.I think its possible to survive without a college degree, if you have very good job experience and a high school diploma. So you think that you need a lot of money to survive? Having a degree on average usually means you have a higher paying job and have job security compared to some one who does not.. Furthermore college is education of your choice, meaning you can learn many interesting things that may turn you on to a field that you never knew you liked or even existed.

So you think that you need a lot of money to survive? Don't you want to me as successful as possible in your life? With the added bonus of knowing you graduated college and are very knowledgeable in a subject? It's better than working on cars for the rest of your life, working paycheck to paycheck and gaining no one's respect. But it seems like you already have your mind made up. You want to take the easy way out, and want other people to help you justify your opinion so that you would feel more confident in your decision. But don't worry bro. the world needs plenty of garbage men.

Well if you're goals are only to survive then no you don't need college, but you better hope you never get really sick, get into an accident, cause an accident, have kids, get fired, quit from your job etc.

Well sometimes depending on what field you're looking into getting into your school sends out your information to prospective employers (if you sign the right papers to let them)....and c'mon...wright job?
It's not just the piece of paper. It's the people and places and most of all the experiences. Since i'm in college, i can intern for Blizzard, or go to New Zealand to go skydiving and protect baby turtles. If you don't go to college you miss out big time.

$20K/yr when you don't need a degree to do your dream job.
But you're going to be at an obvious disadvantage in today's competitive job market - people with college educations are filling jobs that were previously open to those without a degree. And plus, $20,000 isn't all that much, even if it's your "dream job."Please Log In to post.
