So that they would have a better understanding of what they are getting into. After all the president could be the "Commander in chief" of the united states with less combat training than a private in the armed forces.

I'm shipping out in a couple of months and I just can not understand how people that have not gotten thier hands dirty can have such a strong opinion on something.

A while back I throught that England made it so that adults had to serve a year or two in the armed forces but that was years ago and I could be completely wrong.

.. but yeah, I'd appreciate any thoughts you have. Getting a clear picture of your thoughts would give me more peace of mind.

They should probably serve....but most definitely the president should be required to have served active duty....being the commander in chief and all.

I agree they should, instead of imposing their inexperienced ideas on our Generals, I believe that many of the politicians wouldn't even make it through boot camp.

pretty good idea, I think its a fair policy if you ask me. Itll also give them some backbone as the army teaches you to stick to your guns and do whats right

They should, because then they would appreciate that you can't just send troops into inpossible situations and expect them to come through.

A large portion of candidates have served, including the current President. I don't think that solves anything.

it has its place, especially with all the issues in Iraq, but at the same timewith everything they deal with outside the military issues, having the experience would be useless

I don't think it would have much of an effect. Yes, it is the politician's choice to go to war or to engage in diplomacy, but let's leave the advising and management of military engagements to the generals. As others have already stated, George Bush did serve and it clearly hasn't dissuaded him from sending our forces down range.

I don't believe the President should be COC and I don't think they should have to serve in the military either. After all, politics and the armed forces are two completely different career choices.. Instead of a small scrawny intellectual becoming President (it could happen), you could get a trigger happy beefcake leading your country.

many of our politicians do have military experience and some are veterans.
