Me and my friend have this ongoing debate on this subject. BTW I'm dead serious about this and its not like were 5th graders, were juinors in high school. His argument follows He says that it is an animal, because he is calling it a horse with a horn on its head. Im saying that its not an animal because a unicorn is fake and in order for it to be an animal it would have to exist. Than he says some **** about a unicorn being a fake animal, therefore making it an animal. I need someones opinion so we can settle this once and for all.

It's an animal. If it exists or not it doesn't matter the idea of a unicorn is that it's an animal. That's like saying that bigfoot isn't an animal.

Technically, it can't be classified because it doesn't exist, meaning that there's not enough evidence to classify it as anything.

Calling it a mythical creature is better.

It's a fictional animal, like a dragon, leviathan, or vampire (bat-man).

I would have agreed with what your friend said, but then you got all reality on his ass. So I'd say you're right.

Exactly. I was just going to say creature, but even those can exist in relative terms. Mythical Creature is the best description.

But creatures are animals, so therefore Unicorns are animals.

The word mythical would imply that it is nonexistant and creatures don't necessarily have to be animals, they're basically anything besides a human being. It can be an extraterrestial creature, or in this case, a mythical creature that does not exist.

Mythical would also imply that the creature is not known to have existed. So, something like a dodo cannot be a mythical creature since it did exist at some point.

Creature can also mean "something created," so in this case, the unicorn was created by the writers of ancient folklore.

Thus, a unicorn cannot be an animal compared to the animals that we have come to know because it never existed. Mythical creature is more fitting.
