What a stupid question to ask. For those of us who lost parents the answer is pretty damn obvious.

For my parents? No because they'd hate themselves for the rest of their life I did. I would for my brother or someone around my age or younger.

Just my father actually, diagnosed with cancer and died 3 months later. As a cancer survivor myself it is tough, and I think anyone who does lose a parent who is young (he was 54 I think) would want them back at any cost. Sorry if I sounded mean, I see now as I re-read the post it sounds harsh rather than bemused and confused at such a simple question.

For my parents? No. No offense to them, but neither of them is particularly important. Also, they're sort of old as $hit anyway, so they'll probably be dead fairly soon regardless. Also, while I can't speak from experience, I hear that there's nothing worse than outliving one's own children. If that's even remotely true, why would I want to put my parents through that? If dying for my parents would just result in my parents spending the rest of their lives agonizing over my death, then wouldn't I be doing my parents a favor by letting them die so that I may live?

Pretty much this.

Yeah it's a bit cruel, but it's the truth people don't want to hear.

Nothing in my post was incorrect (at least in the opening comments, which was the part that you objected to). I thought that here on OT, we tend to value reason and objectivity over emotion. Are my parents important? Not to anyone other than family and maybe a few close friends (and they don't have any friends). It'd be one thing if my parents were the president and the first lady, but they're just normal people who are very easily replaceable at their jobs. If they died, it's almost certain that only about 20 people would give a crap, and that's only on a purely emotional level. And yes, they sort of ARE old as $hit, at least compared to me. Purely going by age, their lives are worth less since they have less potential use of their lives in first place. What the hell is with you? Everything I said is true, so why are you getting all up in my grill? You're acting as if something can be true and yet simultaneously incredibly offensive.

My parents wouldn't want me to die for them, they've said as much. Were I the parent I certainly wouldn't want my only child to die so that I can live, I think that would be pretty soul crushing, so I guess I get where they're coming from on that. Would I die for anyone? If it was certain death for me and I knew I could save them? There's certainly some people I'd do it for. Would I throw myself into a situation where I could possibly die, even if that was a pretty large chance, for possibly saving someone? I would, almost anyone in fact. Been there done that too.

No, and I don't think my parent (1 dead already) is worth dying for; myopic, bigoted, arrogant, acritical, traditionalistic, and stupid (old too). Unless we go biologically, in which case: I've never met my father, and I lived with my mother for 2 months. To me, they're pretty much just some people, somewhere else in the word.

That's a tough question I had never thought of at least in regards to my parents.  I honestly don't know.  I would however die for my daughter and wife.

In any case I would risk my life to save most people given that the odds are in my favor.

No. I dont think I would.

They have already lived the way they want to live their lives.

they gave birth to me and gave me life. I would think it was my duty to live it out, rather than to sacrifice it for them

Would do anything for them, but dying for them would go against their own wishes for me to survive them, succeed them, and put wonderful children on this Earth to continue the family line.

No, my mother technically has cancer for the rest of her life, even though the tumors were removed so it wouldn't make logical sense to sacrifice my youth for her. Plus she probably wouldn't want me to due to my age.
